I'm in sales and was contacted by a recruiter for a job that would be a nice pay increase and in my same industry. I'm obviously interested. He called me today asking for a list of my current accounts.

Should this be something to be wary of? Or is he most likely just seeing if my accounts would be beneficial in the new job?

Anyone in sales ever dealt with this?

TIA

UPDATE: I just spoke with the recruiter and he said everything is confidential and it's really just to get an idea of the companies I call on to see if it's a fit. I feel better if it's confidential but still feel wary. Any thoughts from everyone?

frick that. I wouldn't give anyone that type of info. Why give away your competitive advantage?

Give him a sample list. make sure it doesn't violate any employment agreements.

Absolutely not--and tell them that.
Ask him for a list of theirs--wait for his response.

I would never give a recruiter a list of my accounts.

Sure... give him a list with contact info. Seems legit IMO.

Wow, I'm surprised to see so many responses of all the same idea. That kind of reassures my gut feeling. When he asked, I had a WTF moment in my head but kept it cordial and said I'd get a list to him.

After seeing yall basically tell me what I already thought, I think I'm going to hold off.

How should I move forward with the guy though?

They are fishing for leads to find new business. Ask him what company he is representing. If he/she won't tell you don't give him/her another minute of your time.

Basically next time you talk to him, say that you've gotten a list together, but until you are with his company, you can't divulge that confidential information over to him.

Either he will understand, or he is a shitbag and I wouldn't want to work for them
