This may not be the correct place for this on TD but I respect mostly everyone's opinion here. If it get's anchored, so be it....

I have a decent job right now. For the past 2.5 years I have built relationships within my industry at some competitors of mine (i'm in National Account Sales). For the past 1.5 years i have been talking to a company that is interested in bringing me on board. They didn't get the approval for the head last year. He reached out to me a few weeks ago to see if I was still interested, and I am. I texted him a few days ago to see if he got approval for the head this year and he said yes. I don't want to pester him but I definitely want to pursue this. When we talked a few weeks ago he said that he doesn't really have any internal candidates or external candidates (except for me) that he's interested in.

Should I wait for him to call/text me or should I call him to discuss? We do have a decent relationship where we have hung out many times late night, our mutual customer respects me so much that they have told this guy i would be a great hire for him and we're on a texting relationship. I think it would be better if I called him vs text him but he's also a very casual guy.

What should I do? Wait or push?

Yes, I want it. There is a 20-30% pay increase and not the mention, it's a much better company than the one I am with currently. I'm with a NYSE company and this one is a private that I would be going to.

Push, but meet in person or at least call to show them you are serious.

Call him during business hours and set up meeting to discuss the job specifically. In this scenario you need to treat him as a business professional and not as an aquaintance/friend IMO.

Call him, ask him to lunch to discuss the job opening. Tell him on the phone that's what you want to talk about so he is prepared for you. Be prepared to pitch yourself at the lunch. Sounds like you're in a great position to get the gig

We live in different cities so lunch is going to be touch. I'm in Chicago and he's in Cleveland. I called him and left a vm for him asking to discuss so we'll see where it goes from here.

Sounds like he does not have final hiring authority.
You need to get a meeting with whoever have that authority to hire on the spot

Lots of people tell you they have the final say so and then they don't

Do your homework and go for it

I would say take to lunch but yeah distance. Phone call was a good move. Give a few days and see if he responds.
