Cabela's has a sale starting today and am thinking about picking one of these up for hog hunting.(appropriate suppressor to be purchased soon)

Anyone have any experience with this model.
Pro's...Cons?

How's it different than a handi rifle? I haven't even looked up the Ruger yet, but Handi rifles are damn cheap. And very quiet with a can.

Ruger American lineup in general are pretty high value rifles. I added abut a pound of shore 10 silicone to the buttock to fill the cavity in place of the chunk of white Styrofoam that the factory uses. Eliminates that hollow sound and gives a little better balance.

Kyle Lamb just did a write up on the Ruger American ( not this specific flavor) and raved about how good it was for the money. You may want to read it (it was a Guns and Ammo article).

My dad has a 308. It is nicer than my M70, but he hasn't shot it enough to know about reliability

Has Ruger gotten so bad that we have to question the reliability of their bolt guns?

I have one in 556 and its nice for a cheap bolt gun. The 16 inch barrel makes it smaller than my 10/22. All I have shot is some cheap 55 grain 556 and It was about 2.5 inches at 100 yards.

I question every gun until I get a hundred rounds through it. Question every semi-auto until I get 300 rounds through it. Don't let the tiniest little thing slide without addressing the problem

You must have the shittiest model 70 ever made. You can't compare a tiger American to a model 70 unless your talking about the push feed one from 10-15 years ago.

Actually already have the Handi-rifle in 300 BLKT sammich.
Nice little gun but the single shot thing irks me with regards to a follow up shot possibility.
Which is the reason I am looking at getting the Ruger Ranch.
Not crazy about the inability to completely free-float the barrel on the Handi as well.

That's right, I was trying to buy it off you a few months back. Single shot vs single shot with a 5 round magazine is the same to me though. I also bet that AAC makes a more accurate rifle than Ruger in 16".

Due to the way the stock bolts to the barrel from the bottom I have found that the slightest change in holding pressure changes POI on the Handi.
Hoping this woul;dn't be the case on the Ruger seeing as how it is a true bedding on it unlike the Handi

The foregrip? Or whatever? Odd that the POS is that great on such a short and stout barrel. Almost need to put both hands on the rear stock, I guess.

Yeah, the foregrip.
Even worked it a bit with a dremel to remove any chance of contact.
Still doesn't group as well as I think it should IMHO

Most of the handi rifles I've shot were pretty good shooters and a few were excellent.

Theres supposedly something you can do with an o-ring between the barrel and forearm that helps. Not sure how much good if really does but it's cheap and worth trying.

While hog hunting with an underpowered rifle, no. I use a 300blk for hogs but I have 30 rounds at my disposal.

Just curious, but why do you want a bolt action 300 BO for hog hunting?

If you want a gun that shoots <2.5-3" groups at 100 yds, PLEASE don't get a Ranch Rifle or Mini 14.
