The Browns are an absolute mess

Interesting piece on Deadspin, citing two different reports, one by a Browns beat writer and a different, well-sourced report by Jason La Canfora, on just how dysfunctional they've been under Haslam thus far.
Jimmy Haslam Is The Dented-Can Store Jerry Jones
Jimmy Haslam Is The Dented-Can Store Jerry Jones
quote:
We'll start with a report from the Northeast Ohio Media Group claiming that the Browns are in danger of losing a draft pick because their GM, Ray Farmer, was caught texting advice to coaches on the sideline during games [...] Farmer is facing a multigame suspension — as many as three or four games — and the Browns are facing the loss of a draft pick if the probe, conducted by in-house NFL executives, shows that Farmer acted improperly.
quote:
As La Canfora's sources tell it, everything is falling apart because of owner Jimmy Haslam, an unrepentant criminal who apparently has no idea how to run a football team:
"Jimmy is way too hands on," said one team source. "He's like Jerry Jones, only without the football knowledge. There's tension between Alec and Pettine. Everybody sees that. Alec is involved in everything; it's too much for him. There are no divisions. The guys on the business side want to run football operations. The GM wants to coach the team and have input on play calling. Jimmy calls the shots, and everyone is afraid of him with that quick trigger finger. If you stand up to Jimmy, he's done with you. Jimmy's own worst enemy is Jimmy."
"It's a mess," another team source said. "Everyone is trying to do everyone else's job. It's crazy."
quote:
And then there's Haslam's meddling. He was the driving force behind the Johnny Manziel draft pick, and La Canfora reports that he also blocked a Josh Gordon trade that would have netted the team a second-round pick in 2013. Now, Haslam is reportedly plotting to trade up in this year's draft so that he can take Marcus Mariota. The sad thing is, that might not even be the worst idea. With Manziel not looking like anything close to an NFL quarterback and Brian Hoyer sure to walk in free agency, the Browns' best option at quarterback right now is Connor Shaw.

They've been a mess since returning to Cleveland, really.

What's sad is that when he bought the team, people were lauding him as an upgrade over Randy Lerner because he was a minority owner in the Steelers.

Seems like not too long ago, they were a QB away from contenders....(well, maybe an offense).
I thought their defense was pretty good.

They're turning into the Rex Ryan era Jets. Good defensive coaching, no offense, terrible ownership and front office.

The new Browns have been an absolute disgrace to one of the richest franchises in the history of the NFL. Being a Browns fan at this time is making me lose my love for the game and team that i loved as a kid. The largest organized fanbase in the world deserves better then this. The Browns better wake up, because i know plenty of Browns fans that arent burdening their kids with being a Browns fan anymore. Generations of Browns fans will be lost if they dont fix this sinking ship.

Sounds like Haslem isn't taking the Browns to the Superbowl.

It's a shame to see one of the great franchises in such disrepair.

I do not hate it, just a natural disdain for the place.
