Schools that are in cities with a lot to offer players entertainment wise always seem to pull in recruits. But how much do you pitch that fact to a high schooler? How difficult is it to make football the number 1 priority to an 18 year old kid in a place filled with so many distractions?

The distractions are the same as they are everywhere else, girls and partying.

Miami wasn't locale over the years, it was payments and inducements to players, now don't get me wrong the setting is nice but it's not like your hanging out on the beach and Biscayne Bay everyday. Their facilities are a dump and they can't fill their own stadium.

USC is the same way, their facilities aren't top notch and they play off campus in an outdated venue. Sure there's plenty to do in LA and the weather is awesome but how many college football players can afford that kind of lifestyle out there.

A lot of good players are actually savvy enough to want to go somewhere that they can get playing time and good coaching.

Alabama is kind of Exhibit A of that, right?

I wouldn't lump USC and Miami together

Miami is a pretty good school, but USC is elite
USC campus is beautiful
tradition that takes a step back to very, very few (if any)
outside of the coliseum, the other facilities are excellent

it's not difficult at all

The McKay Center. It's pretty freaking awesome.

Miami's on a massive down swing. Especially because the administration doesn't wants to separate itself from the past. USC is on a vastly different level than them

And it's kind of disproving (part of) the OP's thesis.

Top recruits aren't flocking to Miami just because it has beaches and was the subject of a Will Smith song.

They are now. Maybe not the runaway best in the country, but the addition of the McKay center and renovation of Heritage Hall has us in excellent company.

It doesn't cost much to go outside. Going to the beach is a couple bucks? What lifestyle are you talking about?

Miami won't ever be fully back. It takes too much money these days and their gate revenue is so far behind UF and FSU. Heck UCF has more fan attendance. There will never be an on campus stadium so that will be a problem forever and their current deal at the Dophin's pad is soooo far away it's not funny.

Yes the Coliseum is outdated, no argument, but it's still the L.A. Memorial Coliseum. It may not mean much outside of L.A. but to local kids it's still a big deal. It's seen so many amazing moments from the NFL, college, two Olympics, a Super Bowl, a World Series; how many school stadiums can say that?

And okay, it's not 'on campus' but it's across the street. Like two blocks away through some rose gardens, past the natural history museum, so it's a pleasant walk too

while I don't agree with the observation, i think Austin should be apart of your argument.

Texas players probably do feel like rockstars on campus. Nightlife there is great and they get well connected quick. I can imagine them getting a bit distracted.

The LA Mausoleum is not in the best part of town, to say the least.

Players get distracted everywhere. Perfect example is the environment in State College,PA. It's literally a small city dropped in the middle of Amish country. I can remember around the beginning of the end of the Joe Pa era they were always getting in trouble.

Fact....there is not a major top football program in a worse part of any town than USC. Don't let those pictures fool you. You go there... Stay behind the gates!

My Dad used to park in the hood, because it was cheap, as in a couple of bucks. Then we'd walk to the museums (Science & Industry, Natural History etc) and spend the mornings there, and the afternoon at the game. In the evening, walk back to the car, in the hood, never a single problem.

And don't forget your gun! All those scary black people will get you!

I've parked in the "hood" for nearly every home game for 12 years and never had an incident. I did have my car broken into twice while visiting friends at GA tech though. And my senior year when I lived off campus I didn't see a single mugging or drive-by! Imagine that! Sorry reality doesn't fit your agenda.
