My g/f's dog is a 70 lb chow mix about 7 years old. He stays inside right now until we get a fence for the backyard. A while back I gave him an old roast beef sandwich. I went to change out his water bowl which is right next to his food bowl and he started to growl viciously at me. My initial response was to smack him in the head. Growing up I had two of my dogs (German Sheppard and Black Lab) do this and they stopped growling after I slapped them in the head. So i'm getting ready to smack this dog but my g/f is watching so I don't. Plus, it's not my dog. Instead I tell the dog in a harsh tone "don't growl at me". But I think the dog was just laughing in his head after hearing this. My g/f said that it was ok and that it just means he likes the sandwich. I said this is never ok but I dropped it.

The morning routine is when I get up I let the dog outside and he does his business. I call his name when he is done and he runs back into the house. The very next morning I call his name and he takes one look at me and runs across the street. Now I'm pissed. I shout at him to get back over here. He looks at me and trots off down the road. Now, I get dressed and get a leash and chase him down. I put the leash on him and he immediately squats and the collar comes off his head. He then trots in front of me back to the house as if he is only coming back b/c he wants to. This cycle happens about 3 more times and now I only take him outside if he has the leash on him. This sucks. I really liked the old system we had. Any suggestions on to deal with this?

I have made sure I'm the first one out of the house and in the house when I take him outside. This is not working. I'm thinking about delaying feeding time one night so he is nice and hungry. Cooking a steak in the house so he can smell it. Sitting down right in front of him and eat the entire steak. Then walk over and give him 2 scoops of dry dog food. My g/f thinks this would just tease him. I'm tired of this crap. Anybody have any non violent methods (shaking my head) to show this dog he is not alpha?

The dog issss alpha and I am beta, what is the problem? I am his bitch. I should eat from the bowl and he should eat at the table. There.....that should take care of those responses. Need some other suggestions?

TLDR: dog growled at me and now he thinks he is alpha. He does not listen to me anymore. Tips to re-establish my alpha role?

Would that have a remote to it that I could turn on/off as I see fit?

Challenge the dog to an Arm Wrestling match. Then, when you beat him 2 out of 3 times, tell him "How do you like THEM apples?"

If that doesn't work . . . sorry, that's my best and only idea.

Flip him over on his back and hold him down.

But be ready for a fight. You gotta earn alpha.

What if he starts whining? How long should I hold him down?

Bite down hard on his left ear and hold until you sense him submit.

In all seriousness, it's this. Just gotta be ready for a fight. You'll break him.

everytime he goes outside to pee/poop, you make sure you are right there behind him marking your territory.

30-60 seconds. But if he really thinks he's alpha he won't let you.

Growl back at him...... Seriously, then start training the shite out of him to let him know when you speak he listens.

Let him get good and hungry and make him work for his food. Always lead him and always be in control.

In the dog world, the alpha is not always the toughest it's the best leader that dogs want to follow. He's got you backed in your beta corner and now you have to convince him that he should follow you. Hunger and training are good ways.

Yes, yes he did. He said "why don't you make me bitch."

I'll try the holding down method. Will do it when the g/f is not around.
