Go Set a Watchman

I didn't realize she never publihed another book after To Kill a Mockingbird. This new one also features Scout and Atticus and is set 20 years after the events in her famous book.

quote:

Lee said today that she “hadn’t realised” the book had survived, “so was surprised and delighted when my dear friend and lawyer Tonja Carter discovered it”. Carter found the manuscript, said the publisher, “in a secure location where it had been affixed to an original typescript of To Kill a Mockingbird”.

She was best friends with Truman Capote. Seemed super strange in the film portrayals. Not sure she was ever in it for the notoriety.

There's actually been speculation that Harper Lee didn't write To Kill a Mockingbird because she never published anything else.

Yep. One of the biggest One Hit Wonders of all time.

I predict that this one will not be as good as TKAM.

Yep. The speculation, and it has a lot of merit, is that actually Truman Capote wrote To Kill a Mockingbird.

The fact that this new manuscript suddenly appears after all these years and Harper Lee is like "oh, I forgot all about writing that" lends to the validity that she isn't the author in my opinion. The Capote penned script is found and Harper sees an opportunity to cash in again.

All that being said, To Kill a Mockingbird is still one of my favorite books and movies of all time. Gregory Peck was born to play Atticus Finch. The scene where he has to shoot the rabid dog, and the dawning realization by Scout and Jem of how great a man their dad really is, is a masterful piece of cinema.

Honest question, what would Capote gotten out of giving Lee credit for TKAM? Not doubting you just doesn't seem to make sense on the surface.

Capote was already a successful author. The theory is that did it to help out his old friend. Some say he wrote it outright, others that he heavily edited and "helped" Harper Lee write it.

Good question. He was definitely a wacky guy in many ways, so there's that, but he was one of the biggest narcissists of all time, so it makes it hard to believe he would allow someone else to win a Pulitzer Prize on something he actually penned.

The only possible wrinkle is, it being written from such an obvious feminine point of view, whereby he felt like there's no way it could have gotten any reception from a male author at the time, so he "gave" it to Harper Lee.

Truman Capote is alleged to have been the real author.

Edit: NVM, someone beat me to it.

Her and Capote grew up together in Alabama. The Character Dill was based off of capote. Ironically, the guy who played Dill was gay also.

It was the costumes that did it. Those baggy arse short shorts would turn any kid gay

Not that there's anything wrong with that....

The more accurate question is: why didn't Capote want credit for it. One answer should be obvious. There is another reason.
