Just saw this on twitter. He's saying that the players don't work out beforehand so they are in shape once camp rolls around.

I find this pretty hard to believe, especially for professional athletes. If they aren't working out beforehand than that says a lot......

Klinsmann is pushing these guys from a fitness stand point, it really is that simple. We're not going to out talent elite competition, but we can out work them.

Keep it up, coach.

Exactly

our athletes playing are just as good or even better as the competition.

But we are no where close on a technical and soccer instincts level.

he is right. looks at how bad they melted in the last 20 minutes of the chile match. They knew this January camp was coming around and they didn't prepare. shame on them for being lazy.

I mean yeah, I can't deny that. I watched it.

I just find it absolutely ridiculous if a bunch of pro athletes didn't get prepared. Maybe like one or two, but the majority?? Especially when a good amount of them are fighting for Gold Cup spots.

Maybe they feel they have some spots locked up?

The only ones that should feel safe with their spots are Brek and Miguel Ibarra if history tells me anything :)

I cant shake the feeling that klins made Brek go full 90 just to mess with him.

History should tell them to never feel safe

MLS heavy side a month before the season starts. Id say they were at their least optimal fitness level.

Still fit sure, but not match fit.

The only explanation I can give is that he wanted to see if he would at least try all 90 and not give up. Seeing how a guy performs after the adversity he's had I think told Klinsmann a lot.

Completely disagree man. Not trying to start another one of those threads here I swear but I just don't think that's accurate at all. Did you watch the Belgium game? They brought Romelu Lukaku off the bench. We countered with fricking Wondo . We do not have nearly the athletes that the best soccer-playing nations in the world have. They are too busy playing WR and DB in the SEC or in the NFL.

Maybe we just have a different opinion on what a good athlete is.

Belgium is kinda the exception lately. I have no idea, besides children of immigrants, as to how they have that many studs coming through at one time for such a small country.
Italy had Cassano, France had Giroud, Argentina had Higuain, and Germany had Klose coming off the bench for them. While all those players are galaxies apart from Wondo in terms of soccer skill, I don't think any of them are much better of an athlete than Wondo. (Maybe Giroud is)
I still think it comes down to getting our kids to focus on footwork and technique instead of coaches throwing out formations that deprive creativity and footwork only just to win.

ETA before everyone says hes nonathletic: He was offered a track scholarship to UCLA.

I can agree with most of what you're saying man, but still, those guys you mentioned IMO far, far superior athletes than Chris Wondolowski. Footwork and technique are a huge part of what we consider athleticism, right? Hardly any of our best players I would consider world class athletes. Dempsey, Jozy, Bradley, none of them. Maybe Howard, for his position.

I can just see the differences when I watch the games on TV. The guys playing for the best club teams and national teams in the world are wayyy better athletes than our players.

You're confusing athleticism and skill/technique.

I believe skill and technique are part of athleticism.

No the difference is their athletes have much more of a soccer brain and are way more technical b/c much higher levels of training from a young age.

This has been debated over and over on this board and most agree with my post.

Wondo isn't a bad athlete, he just offers one particular skill set of poaching.

The ability to maneuver around tight spaces and away from defenders during a cross or set piece def takes very good athletic ability. It would be comparable to a WR adjusting to a pass or someone grabbing a rebound.

Better athlete =/= better soccer player. Just ask anyone who have played. A technical team with not as much athleticism can run circles around a team full of athletes.

So then you're just saying A is a better player than B. Athleticism to almost every one else is a combination of a player's quickness, stamina, explosiveness, and strength. A player can be lacking in a lot of those areas and have great technique and skill. That's why they are separated.

To bad wondo couldn't use his poaching skills against belgium

Hes athletic, no doubt, but i think he is one of those players that the manager, for some reason chooses, even though everyone else sees a better option
