Once Upon a Time in the West

So my girlfriend, a classic cinephile of sorts, and I decided to watch what is supposedly one of the best, if not the greatest, Western films of all-time.
Even with the bloated run time of 165 minutes we still sought to endure this supposed 'masterpiece' on our Saturday night.
Apparently, I missed the boat on this one. I thought the plot was convoluted, if not outright pointless at times, and I had little to no vested interest in any of the characters.
Charles Bronson's character was indeed a badass but I failed to understand his motivation.
Meanwhile, I would hardly consider Henry Fonda's character a classic villain when juxtaposed with other Westerns.
And I fricking hated Claudia Cardinale's character in every respect. frick...that...bitch.
How anyone can state that this is better than The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly or The Outlaw Josey Wales is beyond me.
The cinematography was superb and as usual Ennio Morricone's score was outright brilliant.
However, there were few, if any, classic lines and half the time I was struggling to understand what the hell was being said during dialogue exchanges.
Am I the only one who hated this film?

I've never seen it.

I've never understood the love that this movie has gotten.

For petes sake......
Did you even watch the movie? at least the ending?
I won't give the spoiler but at least wiki it

It's the greatest western ever made.
I can't understand how a fan of the genre could dislike this film.

Greatest Western ever.
Best story? No. But it's all about MOOD. The direction and cinematography suck you into what the West must have truly been like back in the day.

I get his need for revenge against Frank, but why the hell was he attempting to help out Jill McBain? Hell, he leaves her behind after he kills Frank so it's not like he wanted to necessarily have her for his own.

What's the basis of your opinion?
There were times when it felt like a great film (e.g. the opening scene's cinematography and the mood referenced by Rex), but then there were other times when it just seemed very pedestrian.

Agreed. I think it's overrated. Another revenge story. Good, Bad, Ugly was the best western IMO. Fist full of Dollars was pretty good too.

I don't dislike it but I don't see how it belongs on any list of greatest westerns. Forgettable plot, forgettable characters.
My #1 will always be The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance with Lonesome Dove a close second.

Intersting. I just saw liberty valance last night and it was a good movie.
If you like lonesome dove, check out "the big coutry" with Gregory peck. It's on amazon prime. It's a combination of lonesome dove + hatfields and McCoy. Gregory Peck's character as him McKay is on of the most masculine character I've seen.

You didn't like when Claudia Cardinale yelled "I said print station!"
I love that line.

I'm not a fan of spaghetti westerns in general, tbh.

You seriously don't see how him helping Jill helps him get revenge on Frank? I mean really?
