1st time. During the largest Christmas sales quarter.

ABI Research reports that certified Android smartphone shipments fell quarter-on-quarter for the first time in 4Q 2014. In what is traditionally a shipment spike quarter, certified Android shipments fell from 217 million in 3Q 2014 to 206 million in 4Q 2014, mainly due to Apple iOS’ 90% growth from 39.3 million to 74.5 million iPhones shipped, but also due to forked Android. “Google’s Android is being attacked by Apple’s iOS at the high end and forked Android (AOSP) at the low end in high growth emerging markets. The Android One initiative has slowed forked Android growth, but Apple’s success has taken the high end of the market away from certified Android’s premium tier vendors,” said Nick Spencer, Senior Practice Director, Mobile Devices, ABI Research, in a statement. “4Q 2014 has been a seismic quarter in the smartphone industry and many premium tier Android vendors may once again review their operating system and therefore content and service strategies in light of Apple and forked Android vendor Xiaomi’s success. Worrying times for Google’s mobile services and Android, but it presents opportunity for other service providers and even operating systems,” added Spencer.

Judging on how many sold, it's a very, very popular one.

The buzz last year that Apple was losing it's mojo seems silly at this point. If the watch is a hit, I can't even imagine what their numbers are going to be like adding another product category.

Did Windows increase? There are more than 2 players here boys

Windows phone lost market share in 2014. It's like between 2-3%.
Not for nothing, but I've literally never seen anyone with a Windows phone in the wild.

I know 3 people IRL with windows phones. Lack of apps seems like the biggest issue

What android phones came out in that time frame? Nexus 6 and that's about it.

I switched from Windows to an LG G3 a couple of months ago. Lack of apps wasn't as much a problem. Great phone and OS. Wireless charging. Lack of a flagship phone made me switch. I know several others still using Windows. User satisfaction is real high.

Ah, nm, so it just missed Q4. I'm guessing Q4 was for the smaller group of Android users who want a phablet, and rest got Moto X or are waiting for the next LG/HTC/etc.

Android is a POS
Glad people are finally coming around

So did the iPhone

Sept 19th was the first day you could get an iPhone 6. Sept 5th for Moto X.
So unless all Apple fans got their phone in the last week of that quarter then everything else will pop on Q4. The Moto X would have 3 weeks of sales gone by before Q4. Are you really going to compare Moto X sales to the iPhone?
Bottom line is that most of the flagship android devices are Q2 devices with most sales popping up in Q3. So obviously by the end of the year sales will wane down due to people waiting until the new devices hit the market the next year.

Bottom line is...
No bottom line is for first time android sales were down, significantly down. And to make it worse it happened during the peak sales quarter of the year.
If the various manufacturers are unable to get their act together to take advantage of the Christmas spending splurge that's on them.
Obviously consumers are Luke warm on the products currently on the shelves.

I don't necessarily have a dog in this fight, but didn't Cook say on their earnings call that they consider September-December the 4th quarter?

Are you just completely blind.
Its not rocket science.
If the biggest brands put out their top selling phones in mid to end of Q3 then end of Q2 and Q3 will be the highest grossing time for them. Then the following quarter they will see a drop in sales due to the market anticipating the next set of releases.
Do you think Apple will top their Q4 sales in Q2 of this year? Or will people hold off and wait until Apple's next release of phones?

Yeah but I can read 4th quarter saels in braille... they still say the same thing. For the first time 4th quarter android sales are off & not just a bump--way off.
Please explain to me how this cycle of releases has never been an issue all these past 4th quarters, but suddenly it is this 4th quarter.
