While margins at US refineries have dropped some in late 2014 to 2015 they are still very healthy. Midwestern refinery margins have pulled down closer to US Gulfcoast margins. But overall US refineries are doing just fine. Main reason is the spread between WTI and Brent. Refiners that export products to South America compete against product based on Brent feed with Brent being $10/BBL higher right now.

LyondellBasell accuses Steelworkers of threatening returning workers

LyondellBasell announced Tuesday that it has filed an unfair labor practice charge against the United Steelworkers union, alleging that union representatives have made threats against employees who have returned to work and have used abusive language in social media.

The company also contends it has witnessed threatening behavior at the gates of its Houston refinery as employees arrive to work, according to a letter to employees from Kevin Brown, executive vice president of global manufacturing, refining, global engineering services and global projects. The company filed the charge with the National Labor Relations Board.

“This action by the USW is extremely disappointing and the impact it has on individuals and families is saddening,” Brown said. “We understand the hardships that have been placed on our employees due to the USW’s actions. It is for this reason that we opened the gates and invited our represented employees to return to work at the Houston Refinery. We respect the rights of all of our employees, whether they decide to return to work or to remain out on strike.”

In response, many employees have returned, Brown said.

“We acknowledge that their decision was not easy,” he said.

I wonder why no USW members ask why they don't get retirement benefits, full pay during a strike ( once in 30 years btw ) full medical insurance / basically everything you get if you were working. They claim 885,000 members in the US working in many industries.
885,000 x say $75. A month avg " dues " = $66,375,000.00 a month
You don't even want to run the numbers on what this is per year.
Yes that is $66 million. If this isn't a business looking out for its interests then I don't know wtf you'd call it. Call the companies greedy if you want but they pay out a whole hell of a lot more from what they EARN than the USW does.
I can t imagine people not being able to see how bad they are being screwed.

Exactly. They're looking out for the business side of USW not the people they represent. Same as 98% of congress.

I m going back to my job on Thursday and it's because I'm losing SELF RESPECT each day I sit out ( in support ) of this. Some will support this with blind conviction to financial ruin. The same kind of brainwashed shite that brings folks to wear purple Nikes / kill themselves while waiting on a spaceship from heaven to come pick them up.

they will tell you This is for the Union heads salary and to pay the light bill.

Plus they need money to donate to the democratic candidates campaigns.

That would be a smart move. The union and Shell are not meeting today, only a phone call.

You sure about this? I thought they were meeting "at the table" again today. Which leads me to believe this would be an in person meeting.

I can only go by what I heard from the man with my own two ears. Margins are elevated on the gulf coast due to the cold weather in the north east and refineries are running at full rates. Shell, nor any of the other companies are willing to let the USW dictate staffing levels at their respective refineries. Oil companies are not backing down.

USW will not get public support for their cause either. Their members are in the top 7% in wage earners in the US with top tier benefits packages. While there are catastrophic incidents in industry, the incident rates and injuries are no where near other occupations.

We were just informed that they are not meeting at the table. This is only a conference call to discuss if they are going back to the table next week.
I don't see this ending any time soon.

I would expect quite a number of folks to come back starting tomorrow. USW management screwed these guys over big time.

That's what I was afraid of. Packing my bags to cross next week if all we get is more hot air this week (which seems most likely).

You've obviously been a union man for a long time.

Are the union bosses not taking any pay in solidarity with their brothers and sisters?

I bet if you'd ask them they would say "this is when we earn our pay"

To which I would respond "then why do you get paid when we aren't striking?"
