Exactly how I feel.

why does the company have to pay you $7500 as a "signing bonus" when you already are employed by them
That is their idea. They offer a signing bonus all the time on contracts.

... And the "entitled victim mentality" makes it impossible to negotiate with.

where did I say that? Where did that come from?
Maybe I read this the wrong way.

paying someone 100k plus a year who a year earlier was probably selling insurance on 100% commission salary, before hitting lottery getting his or her current job, isn't exactly short changing
What should their previous job have to do with compensation at their current employer?

So should people working in hospitals. How dare they expect people to work while others are normally sleeping.
Uhhh, a lot of nurses are unionized across the country and strike all the time.
I know a nurse that is a "scab" who travels the country and works at hospitals where the union nurses are striking. She makes very good money crossing the nurses picket lines

it was regarding an entitled attitude, more of a personal comment.
Not regarding how employer should look at its employee

Yeah but they don't strike over having to work horrible hours(meaning working at night or holidays and weekends...not the amount of hours)....it's part of being a nurse in a hospital.
Not every state is unionized though. In some states you can be fired for even voicing about unions.

It is the side they have to play to the media. they really don't have another avenue because no one wants to believe it is about safety.
Shell says they have offered contracts, but who knows what is in those contracts. Shell is playing the aloof aw shucks and moaning about oil prices like they matter. Refining cost get a lot cheaper when raw materials are cut by a third.
There is common ground and it will be found.

That is not why they are striking now. I don't know what the shitty hours comment was about. my wife's schedule is just as shitty.

because no one wants to believe it is about safety.
Serious question.

I don't think the plant workers are striking over that either
Posted on 2/1/15 at 2:16 pm to tankyank13
everything happening now with this contract is national now. all local issues are agreed upon and nothing was do with any kind of money/benefits. idk where yall get the whining from bc its not from around here in SoLa. if there is a strike about money/benefits it is usually coming from the national level and not local. I for one am very thankful and appreciative of what the union offers and has done for us. the USW on the national level is where you get the money hungry people from. us here, locally, would be happy with keeping the same thing as the last contract.

There were some I think but the funniest one is they essentially said it's unsafe to hire contractors. It's a thinly veiled attempt to force out contractors.

there were some dealing with safety, mainly staffing levels that have caused some risky situations.

I think our comments got misinterpreted then.
I think the other poster was saying that plant workers act like they are the only ones with horrible hours.
I'm on the fence about nursing unions...some of the stuff they do is great. They came out in full force during the whole Ebola scare a few months ago and put a lot of pressure on hospitals to have proper safety gear to prevent staff from being exposed....and it worked.

i dont think so. if its a safety concern its probably dealt with at the local level. not all facilities have the same "safety" standards.

Yeah, no doubt they want to do away with contractors. They aren't going anywhere though.
It sort of spawns from companies claiming there are no qualified workers to hire, but won't hire the contractors already doing the work.
For example, a contractor is perfectly fine to perform the job, but is considered inexperienced when they apply for a union advertised job.
