I have a pioneer vsx-1023 receiver connected to a directv box with a hdmi cable. It's been working fine for over a year. I came home yesterday and the input on the receiver was switched to pandora and I am not getting any sound on any inputs. What the hell happened?

Try Unplugging everything and plugging it all back in.

Receivers are susceptible to heat- did you leave it on? is it in a place it gets good air circulation?

I have an auxiliary fan on mine- learned the hard way with the last one.

It has not been turned off in months. Never had an issue before.

I keep my audio system on 24/7. I don't believe this to be an issue unless it is a POS receiver.

The majority of consumer electronics are definitely not meant to be left running 24/7.

Especially things like that which generate lots of heat.

What is the point of leaving it on other than to waste electricity ?

My tv gets turned off. Receiver stays on. It doesn't get hot. I have done this with every reciever I hve ever owned. That's not the problem

It is less stressful on the capacitors--every time you turn an electric device off, they fully discharge. When turned back on, they must fully charge back up. This act of charging/discharging wears them out at a faster rate.

You failed to mention if anyone else had access to the unit/remote while you were gone.

Wife at work, kids at school. Only thing in the house was a cat.

Let's start with the obvious. What mode and input is it set to? Is it correctly set to an analog or digital input for the setting?

The speaker button. Is it in the proper position?

Is it set to the main zone?

It is connected to the cable/sat input. Zone 2 is turned off. I tried connecting to other inputs with no luck. There is no sound when I switch the receiver input to tuner anymore either. So it's not just the tv connection. I did a factory reset and it didn't change anything.

Because the unit was tuned to Pandora,
my first thought was that some kids got hold of the remote trying to turn the unit on.
If so, they punched random buttons until they gave up.
This happened to a friend and it took me hours to set the unit up again.

Then you mentioned the cat. I had a PIONEER VSX-1020 and my cat lived on top of it for 2 years.
She loved the warmth from the unit. However, she kept shedding and the unit finally overheated.

I took the cover off and vacuumed all the cat hair out of the unit before returning the unit to the store.
The electronics store honored the extended warranty and I used the refund to buy a different brand.

If your cat spends time on the unit, the blocked air vents could cause overheating and power supply problems.

Problem is resolved. There is a button right next to the input knob that's says "speaker" that's apparently lets you turn certain speakers off. I guess the cat jumped up there, hit the speaker button and rolled the input knob over to pandora. Who knows. Thanks for all the advice.
