If you want to include doubles titles to prove Serena is ahead of Graf, then you have to admit that Navritalova has 25 more titles than Serena. Which, technically speaking, is a lot.

AGREED. But with all that being said its A shame that we will never know...Graf against Martina in their prime....Serena vs. Graf in their prime....Martina vs. Serena in their prime... ALL would be awesome to see.... In their specific eras though EACH was the best without question............

I personally don't just look at grand slam titles at all. I was just putting their stats out there.

I really don't understand the hate for Serena. She was hated before the foot fault incident, but now people just default to that as the reason why they hate her.

Not sure the fields are deeper now, but probably, with thousands of eastern European girls looking for their meal ticket. The only knock I have on Serena's resume (it's not her fault) is I just feel her era is so mentally soft. Basically, over the course of her career, the only players I respect are Henin (weighed about two pounds, but amazing flair and spirit), Hingis (good consistent cerebral player who did well before the power freaks came on), and Maria (mental giant against everyone except Serena). Davenport and Clijsters were decent, but just nice chicks who ballbashed their way to a few slams. And the sister matches were always awful. But, without Serena, Venus could be in this conversation. Without Venus, Serena probably is GOAT already. Serena rolled into a few slams out of shape and still won because of serve and mental toughness. That speaks to how much better she is than everybody else. Graf was the GOAT mover, but Serena took the women's power game to a new level.

How many Olympics was Graf in compared to Serena? I'm not a tennis buff but Serena still has a few years. I think she will be the best ever in my lifetime

There is definitely some racism in a bit of the criticism. But honestly, sometimes she seems socially retarded. She has said a lot of childish, arrogant things when she loses and is just generally weird. She has gotten better, though. Maybe it was about getting used to her fame. I think her dad kept the girls very protected, plus I think the Jehovah's Witness stuff probably had some effect. Venus has always seemed really nice and humble, which is the strange part. I thought the crip dance at Wimbledon was great, even though some people were upset about it.

I think she is, if not Navratilova but it is all just opinion.

I actually remember talk of Navratilova being a choker for a while before she started winning everything, even think I remember her being a little chunky.

she's the classic "was awesome but could have been better" sports personality. your typical white, suburban male HATES those people

i've never figured out if this hate is because these people think (1) athletes are our party favors and we deserve to see their peak and they violate our support in sports if we're not allowed to see their peak or (2) they are just jealous b/c they busted arse and simply weren't talented enough, and during their developmental years they got passed by in sports by more talented competitors who were much lazier

I think that's a ridiculous argument considering she just won a 19th slam and has been the consensus #1 for nearly 15 years.

and i think her treatment by fans shows it's not a face thing as much as a personality thing

super talented, super cocky stars who don't have to work 100% to win are loathed by american fans

the media used to protect these guys back in the day (ruth, mantle, joe namath, etc) but can't anymore

it's not untrue, though

as stated earlier, she's won plenty of tournaments being out of shape. she's busted out of a ton of majors for the same reason

But why does it apply for her, but not, say, Tiger who was universally loved until Elin took a sand wedge to his face.

i don't think tiger was ever accused of not giving 100%, though. he was never really cocky, either

that affair shite changed a lot of people's minds about him and he's never recovered off the green (and on the green injuries f'd him)
