Favorite John Prine album?
Posted by betweenthebara on 1/31/15 at 3:07 am20
I'm familiar enough with his music, but ive never really jumped in to any one album. I'm looking to take that leap, and taking recommendations.

Diamonds in the Rough
Bruised Orange
John Prine
Sweet Revenge
German Afternoons
That order. I'm partial to bluegrass, which comes on strong in Diamonds in the Rough. Even though I'm not religious in any way, I'd like the eponymous song from that album to be played at my funeral. The version of Souvenirs features Steve Goodman and is fantastic. Rocky Mountain Time has some of my favorite lines:
The water tastes funny
When you're far from your home
But it's only the thirsty
That hunger to roam
....
Christ I'm so mixed up and lonely
I can't even make friends with my brain
Well I'm too young to be where I'm going
But I'm too old to go back again
Even the songs with more levity are awesome. Frying Pan is good for a laugh, even if it's kinda sad. Everybody has a great line:
While out sailing on the ocean
While out sailing on the sea
I bumped into the savior
He said pardon me
I said Jesus!, you look tired
He said Jesus!, so do you
Why don't you sit down son
'Cause I got some fat to chew.
John motherfricking Prine. Always in the feelz or the lulz

Having to pick one, it's John Prine. Bruised Orange was close. If you don't have Prime Prine or the box set. Get one or the other.

Solid fricking write up my man.
I do believe I'll check it in that order.

Everclear referred to him in a song.
"Gonna put a John Prine record on.
Think we need to slow down for a while."
Always made me want to listen to him? As does this thread.
Who does he compare to? I have absolutely NO point of reference.

Kristofferson said Prine was 'so good we may have to break his thumbs'.

Can't go wrong with Prime Prine.
One of the reasons that Spotify is so good, is that you can pull up someone like Prine and listen to everything, then decide what you like.

Speed at the sound of loneliness is a great song

The Missing Years hasn't been mentioned yet. It 's my favorite. Great, great artist and storyteller.

This is my favorite as well. Lake Marie is a good one too.

That's my favorite version, but it's on the box set only as far as I know.
The Diamonds in the Rough cut definitely has Prine and another singer. I had always assumed it was Goodman.
ETA: Checked and Goodman is credited with guitar and vocals on the album.

All I know for sure is, there are two versions that I have heard:
Diamonds In The Rough version
and
The Box Set Version.
While you can hear Goodman in the background on the Diamonds one, he actually trades verses with Prine on the second one. I like the second one so much more.

Strange. No idea what's going on there. I remember telling a friend of mine how much I liked the way they alternated verses, and he thought I was crazy. He had only heard the DITR version. Go to allmusic and listen to the sample.

His first - self titled
Agree with this, by a smidgen over Sweet Revenge.
From the 2013 thread. I'll go with his first, just barely over Sweet Revenge.
