To your OP, that formula is ridiculous but...

Knowing what I know about Dallas, I am shocked they even allow 2800sf houses to exist. Those are some "look at me and my giant place" folks if I have ever seen them. Not to mention, their architecture absolutely blows and I really can't understand why (given how big the state is) that they build those McMansions right on top of each other. I have seen 4,000sf houses six feet apart.

My brother and I shared a room until I left for college.

Grew up in a 2 bed 1 bath house. It was on the water, and my parents planned to eventually add on or rebuild on the lot. Never could pull the trigger.

Katrina took care of that after I had moved out.

the size of homes has just about doubled in the past 40 years ... people want every kid to have their own room ... kids must have a playroom or their own tv room ... etc ... 2800 sq ft is huge for a family of 4, which is the average ...

leads to fewer family conversations/gatherings and a bigger mortgage ...

'murica ...

I had 6 in a 2400 sq ft house. My son and I, my wife and 3 girls. While it was manageable, it was not ideal. We bought a house 15 months ago that was 2900 sq ft with an unfinished basement. It took me 2 months to build in the basement which included a full bath, 2 bedrooms(for my older girls) a home office for my wife and a big entertainment room. That made the house 4100 sq ft finished. I left one room (200 sq ft) unfinished for storage. The house in the perfect size for us. Not to big....not to cramped. I will say that had we not been in a financial position to make the move, we would still be fine in the other house which is now a rental. It's not like kids were sharing rooms but we did not have a basement for storage and everything was stacked in my garage so much we could only get one car in there.

Of course 2800 sq ft isn't huge. My house is about 2200sq ft, but it never occurred to me that when I have kids I'll need to move b/c they need more space than that to be happy in life. (I'm assuming 1 or 2 kids btw), not a litter)

I see this concept on those house hunting shows too. Every kid needs their own room according to mom & dad and they never ever consider having them share b/c that's just unthinkable.

I shared a room with my brother growing up. Sure there were times it sucked, but such is life.

Also each kid needs their own room. Like he really means NEEDS. He won't even look at a houses unless it has 4 bedrooms because he's got 3 boys(close in age too BTW).
I think most people buy as big of a house as they can afford. I would never force my kids to share a room, especially teenage kids, if I could afford a bigger house.

to be fair, its pretty hard to discuss this without mentioning your own square footage.

This...

Growing up, we had 7 of us in a three bedroom house.. My three sisters shared a room and my brother and I shared a room..

Today, my wife and I have twins, and live in a little bigger than a 2400 sq ft, 4 bdrm house which is too big me.. May down size one day...

The bigger the house the more crap to clean...

Jesus - 2800 sq ft not that big?? And I thought I was living large in an 1800 sq ft house.

Seems about right, I have 3 kids and about 650 sq ft per person. I didn't use a formula like that, but just found a house that had what we wanted.

Jesus, man. Be a little more dramatic. Not many people think in these extremes. People live in homes that allow their kids to have their own rooms because they can. Your drama queen attitude makes me think you assume parents would get rid of a kid before they made them share a room if that's all they could afford.

i have to wonder if this is less about a true 600/700 measure and more about 'average' dimensions of 4 bedrooms plus a kitchen, den, living & dining room?

maybe once you've selected the number of bedrooms/kid, the rest kinda falls into place automatically.
