We watch the night parades between the capital and the pentagon. We've never had a problem. Watched on River Road one year and there was a less desirable crowd there.

Orion turns between the Capital Annex Building and the Pentagon by the Capital before hanging another Right and headed back up through downtown.

In my experience that area is much sparser from a crowd standpoint and far more family friendly. You can also park on the other side of the capital and have a short walk back to the car and a quick exit to 110 to get out of downtown.

We usually hit Orion, Mutts and Spanish Town.
Orion is OK, we watch it downtown. They've got stuff that kids like -- bands, dance teams, etc.

Mutts is very family friendly -- especially if your kids like dogs. It's around North Boulevard.

Spanish Town is the biggest parade. Some of the floats have themes that are a little risque, but most of the sexual references will sail over the heads of kids. The parade is a lot rowdier on Spanish Town Road, and they don't throw any beads there, so you're better off catching it on North Street. They really chuck the beads there. My mother-in-law comes back every year with beads up past her earlobes.

BR parades are all pretty mediocre and tame outside of Spanish Town. Spanish Town is a huge party, tons of alcohol, a deluge of throws, and lots of political satire. Spanish Town is my favorite Mardi Gras parade, period, but outside of it, BR parades are really lame. Krewe of Mutts is fun if you have a dog.

Spanish town is a truck parade that goes on forever. No masks are required, anyone can join and ride. Beads are meh, some trucks are creative tho w/ political and sexual undertones. Lots of LP and AP folks.

Sorry, not real Mardi Gras IMO.
