I don't think he was bitching about it. That's roughly what I make. We're able to save a good bit, but I'm not an OT baller. I regularly have to make decisions on financial matters. One thing I have always tried to do is speak out loud about my thought process.

I make certain that my kids know nothing about money; those little shites make a small fortune in birthday and holiday cash. I'm not about to give up that extra revenue.

I don't have kids, but I will probably tell them how much I make and how much our house note, car note, insurance retirement, etc... are.
I think it's important for kids to understand the value of a dollar and how much things cost. They need to realize what it takes to live in a nice house, go to private school, drive nice cars, etc...
I know some kids (19-21) who don't have the slightest clue what a good salary is or how much it costs to buy a house or a car. Really sad, considering you should be making the decision of what you're going to do with your life around that age.

My son knew from a young age about all that we have. I also got him started investing at a young age. He's 23 now and he's had a firm understanding about money and bills for a long time. He's never asked me for a dime for anything.

My parents told me how much they made to make the point that you don't have to make a fortune to be happy and live well. My dad didn't make much, but he supported a family of 4 and we had a little extra to go on vacation most years.
I was blessed to have parents that didn't have to perform the exercise in the OP to make us appreciate money; they instilled that in us from the beginning.
They know how much I make because it makes them happy to know that everything they sacrificed for my opportunities paid off.

My parents haven't really been open to me about it until recently, and I don't think they ever told my sister how much they make.

Yeah, but I'd say my parents are pretty humble in their spending. They don't buy anything they know they're not going to use extensively, to where I think I know way more about their finances than she does.

Sorry your kids are loudmouths. Mine know exactly what we have regarding assets both real estate and stocks, retirement etc... She also knows where the documents are including safe deposit keys and knows all of our assets are in a trust for her. She has been told this from about the age of 7 and if something happened to my wife and myself she will at least know where everything is. We have managers set up to help and she has met with them so she understands this. She gets an allowance, she earns money and she is gifted money by family members. She saves and manages it all with pretty good results.
She is a young teenager.

I make $85k. I'm a DoD employee so it's a matter of public record anyway. Not great for my chosen profession but more than enough for me.
I'm 35 and still don't know how much my parents make. Maybe I'll ask them one day.

Huh?
He's trying to explain to his kids how much the stuff he provides for them costs. No idea where you got "bitching" from.
And depending on where he lives, how many kids he has and whether or not his wife works, that $120K might not be making him an OT baller. In fact, I'd bet a months salary that it doesn't.
