the federal bank counts those pennies that're out of circulation and draws interest on them. It's called seigniorage

I enjoyed not having to deal with them when we visited Canada. They just round. Seems to work well, we should get rid of them as well.

There's really no reason to even have to use something as inefficient as the coin system in this modern day and age.
I can't even remember the last time I had to use change. Using a vending machine is a sign of poor decision making, although I did have to use one while at the hospital. It accepted credit cards though.

My molly dealer now accepts all major credit cards so I don't need cash anymore
