mamou is the real mardi gras. not a fricking Christmas parade like everywhere else.

chase chickens, eat gumbo, ride horses, and get drunk.

My thoughts are that you should go to New Orleans.

I can eat gumbo and get drunk whenever I want. I have no desire to ride a horse, and I have no idea why anyone would even want to chase chickens. Yet every year people hype the shite out of Mamou Mardi Gras.

We used to run in Eunice for a few years and had a blast. If you are not from the area, someone might take you in on their trailer, or they may tell you to frick off. A lot of small town, BS politics go into which trailer is first, who rides when and where. We just said frick it and stopped going.

Pretty awesome. I didn't do Mamou, but I did Eunice, and from what I've heard, it's pretty much the same. You wear a cool costume, get totally trashed, ride in a trailor, chase chickens, piss in rice patties, eat delicious boudin, and get paraded through town in the end. I had a blast.

Have you ever done Mamou mardi gras for anything else besides running?

I haven't ran in 4 years and it's been the best 4 years of mardi gras. Just go Saturday and Monday night.

Been there many times many years ago. Haven't been in about 20 years though. It's definitely a cultural thing. If you're expecting anything like N.O., or any other city's celebration really, you're in for a shock. If you aren't willing to accept and perticipate in small town "country type" attitudes, do go. Leave your city attitude at home. Its a lot of fun if you like the sort of thing. Bunch of Coonasses just acting stupid and getting drunk. With the right attitude, you'll end up meeting some real nice people, eat some great food, probably be invited to ride on their trailer and possibly be even offered a horse to ride for the day. With the wrong attitude, you will probably end up getting your arse kicked and wake up on Wednesday in a muddy rice field and real sore.

I miss the fun there.

Mamou is by far the best Mardi Gras experience I've ever had. Luckily I was able to go with a local who knew everything and everybody involved with the festivities. You won't get any sleep, you'll be drunk all the time and you'll love every minute of it.

Haven't been in a LONG time. I think Baby Got Back was being played out on 94.5 back then. Was a damned good time.

I always assumed Mardi Gras as the New Orleans style experience.

I found this video online... LINK

Chase chickens, get trashed off Bud Light, bounce on a horse's back, jump into a drainage ditch (make sure and watch the 5:15 mark when that imbecile almost breaks his neck and collarbone).

I can't think of a more vacuous experience.

If you haven't been go. The runs great but the sat morning before is the best. The French music starts at 6am sat morning in Fred's Lounge. Def leave the city attitude and parade type expectations at home. I've been going as long as I can remember and have met ppl from across the globe. That being said, it's almost impossible not to have a great time.
