New AC/Heat advice needed

Our Lennox central air and heat system was installed about 21 years ago. Still works fine, but at that age I figure it is on borrowed time waiting for something to conk out.
I'm thinking about going ahead and replacing the whole system now rather than risk it going out in the middle of an August heat wave when the installers are all busy.
Would you replace the 21 year old system, or do you think it could have several more years of good?
What are the best quality and value brands? Any new features come along in the last 20 years I should look for?

I usually change things after they break

Im actually in a pretty similar situation. I have a Trane system and the tech who worked on it last told me that it is in good condition and does not seem prone to breakdowns but given the age of the system that the new ones are so much more efficient. Something to think about.
However Im not replacing mine until it cannot be repaired or makes no sense to be repaired.

In the appliance world, anything made back then will last longer than anything made today. May not be as efficient, but this is very true.
