the weather is getting nice and the smoker is about to come back out of the garage for the Spring so I'm getting ready.

my main question will be: is the thermapen worth the $93 price tag?

I'm looking at getting the Maverick ET-733 to keep an eye on my smoker temp and temps on butts/brisket, etc.

I doubt it would be worth it to use when I do ribs, so I was looking at the thermapen too. anyone own one or have any recommendations for any other instant reads? I threw out my old one because it was a piece of shite for $20 and never worked.

Not IMO for backyard cook. I got a $10 Weber one at Lowes that reads within a couple seconds (2-3 max), and is as accurate as my Maverick ET 732. Those two work well for me, and I've yet to over or under cook anything with them.

wait until you find the thermapen on sale which is pretty often.

I've got the ET-732 and a thermapen. I use the maverick all of the time. I rarely use the thermapen but I am glad I have it when I need it.

Maverick/Thermapen combo is a winning combo. I use my thermapen all the time, but I nerd out on temperatures of things. I also have an infrared thermometer, but it is really only good for checking surface temps on skillets and whatnot.

As Coater said, wait for the thermapen sales. You can get them for $60.

perfect. how do you clean them? I read some reviews mentioning the temps aren't being correctly registered and other people suggested it was because water got into the sensors and fricked them up.

Soap and water. Be gentle and make sure to not get the actual wire very wet. That has been known to cause failures.

water will definitely frick up the sensors..

Afternoon shower hit in the middle of a smoke last spring, probes got wet while I was messing with something and went out on me. Called maverick and had new probes the next weekend for under $20.

I have a thermapen, use it regularly, and couldn't recommend it more highly.

I can't speak to the Maverick, but for my smoker, I have the TW8060, which is Thermoworks' dual channel thermometer. I opted for the high heat ceramic probe so I can monitor temp in my kettle grill (I think it's rated for 1200 degrees) as well. It was a little pricey, but I love the thing. Careful though, I had too much to drink once and set my chimney next to it while getting some charcoal started. I'm now on my second TW8060...

By the way, I got an open box sale notification in my email yesterday with thermapen prices for $74. It's well worth that.

I love my Thermapen and use it all the time. If you want to save a buck, try the Thermopop. Only about $25 and reads in just a couple seconds. Not instant like big brother, but not bad.

Get a thermoworks tw-8060. Much better made than maverick. You don't have the remote capability, but you can get a cheap audio baby monitor if you need that.

Thermapens are also great.

Eta - best for butts is a stoker or guru, but the tw-8060 is great if you dont want a pricey controller.

I have an IR thermapen with a detachable probe. Best of both worlds, at around $100.

I purchased a Thermapop this week but I have not had a chance to use it yet. Can someone tell me the difference between the Maverick 732 and 733? I am looking to purchase one of the two soon. TIA

Maverick Ready Check works great. I can walk away and always know the grill and meat temperature with the remote sensor. It's a boss.
