a generic "no touristy stuff" just sounds gay and pretentious as hell, especially when you've never been there.

They can meet me at church too. I'll hold them a spot.

Felix's instead of Acme for oysters.
Johnny's Po-Boys on St. Louis St. or Pierre Maspero's on St. Louis and Chartres. Napoleon House across the street.

New Orleans has streetcars, the trolley is the little wheel that rolls on the catenary to keep the electric motor running.

Look up Kermit Ruffins and find where he is playing and go listen. I heard him at Bullet's Sports Lounge off St. Bernard a while back and he was so good.

Parkway Bakery and get the Surf and Turf Po-Boy. Spend time around Bayou St. John.

Get a Muffaletta from Central Grocery and walk around the French Quarter.

Go to Cafe du Monde and the French Market.

Go Uptown and then shop on Magazine Street.

Rockin' Dopsy Zydeco is playing on Saturday, the 31st. That would be a good show with lots of locals.

P.S.: No one really goes there to bowl.

I would set some tannerite up in the middle of the street, strategically place a wallet near

Wait a few seconds for the thugs to flock, shoot tannerite can and watch the scene unfold

You mean bartenders who don't know how to make simple cocktails?

Seriously I agree with you. The bar itself is mediocre but the location and porch make it a must for people to visit for a drink or two. Especially if they're taking the streetcar up and down St. Charles, they can stop in and then go to a number of other bars farther down the street.

A professional chef would likely enjoy places with James Beard award nominated and winning chefs like Peche (recently Best Chef of the South (tied) and Best New Restaurant) and Gautreau's (the other tie for recent Best Chef of the South). Peche is casual. Gautreau's is fine dining. Commander's with Tory McPhail would be a good option. So would August with John Besh.

In New Orleans, a lot of places are going to have tourists because these days and with the internet, folks do research before they go. I'd take them to lunch at Casamento's. Lots of local and lots of tourists go there. It's worth the trip.

Both Emeril's and Delmonico are favorites of mine. People tend to think Emeril = tourist. The food is delicious. I loved my last experience at Delmonico. Delmonico is more fine dining. Emeril's serves lunch.

There's a lot from which to choose. Domenica's chef is up and coming. I expect he will win a Beard award eventually. Wasn't he nominated last year?

I always try to take first time visitors to Cafe du Monde for an afternoon snack, if not breakfast. Just do it.

There's an interesting graveyard across from Commander's. I think you can stroll through there after lunch. Good place for Saturday or Sunday brunch if you can get in.

I'm not a gay, so I don't drink martinis or pina coladas. Jack and Coke or Crown and Sprite are pretty hard to frick up, and that's all I drink

Trust me, those recent grads at the Columns will frick it up. Then they'll charge you an arm and a leg.

The only thing that place has going for it is the porch and nostalgic smell.

Now you know

Either way, I go to Columns maybe once a year to chase tail, so I don't have that much experience with the place. Too expensive compared to places within a couple of blocks like Mayfair and Milan (which I like better)

Those are drinks for high schoolers, so you should fit right in at Columns.
