I've been on the road a lot lately so I have resorted to listening to the LSU games. And by listening have picked up on some broadcasting negativity by Hawthorne. Is this how he always is with calling basketball games?

Last night for example the Tigers didn't play great but they won. If I wouldn't have known the score I would've thought the Tigers were losing by 20 the way Hawthorne was calling the game. To me he calls the game as if the Basketball team is as good as the football team. Top ten type team. Like last night when South Carolina was 6/6 from the stripe it seemed as though Hawthorne was all enthusiastic about it....When Carolina made shots last night Hawthorne would say "its good" with a mocking/condescending/I told you so tone. As if LSU could've done something to prevent it. Then at the end of the first half/beginning of second half Jarrell Martin hits a huge three to break the zone and Hawthorne says. "Oh, it went in". As if it is a surprise. That was a big shot! And mood changer, but the negativity reduced the effect.

I guess it wears me down a bit after a while. I know part of the emotion is that possessions are only like 30 seconds a piece max in basketball where as in football a possession can last 7 minutes, so the tide turns are constant. It just seems like he could do a better job navigating the flow of the game.

At this point I would rather listen to Ford just call the plays and not fill the broadcast with negativity and could've, should've would've.....

That being said How bout them Tigers! Pulled a huge game out last night. I am certainly excited about the team and am looking forward to the future.

Hawthorne isn't as bad as some out there. I think he is just as capable of overstating how well the Tigers are playing as the other way around. And he's pretty much entrenched in the job.

I really hate listening to him. He's a fricking stick in the mud.

I can see this and the good part is he is passionate. I just wish the zeal would be more positive. There is a lot to look forward too and the future is bright for this team.

He does make me mad sometimes with his tone but I'm sure everybody has their flaws

Basketball was the only sport I didn't mind listening to him. I hate listen to him do baseball. The man never mentions the score during play, and every routine pop up out sounds like it going out of the park.

I agree totally. Hawthorne is so negative it makes my ears bleed.

Also can't stand that he calls the basket a "sack"

Driving to the sack? Long sacker? Seriously?!?

Hawthorne is terrible. They'd be better off just letting Ricky Blanton call the game with anyone else

I had to listen to him last night, too. He did seem more negative than usual for basketball. He's great at the technical part. Basketball is probably the most difficult sport to call because of the ball movement.

And I can't listen to him for baseball. It's terrible. As good as he is on the technical part for basketball, he's atrocious at calling baseball plays.

Its not that bad, the guy loves LSU and everything abput LSU. Sometimes he makes mistakes and he can get emotional, but he is the voice of the Tigers and has been for many years now. I love Jim and things wont be the same when he is no longer the voice of our Tigers.

Before LSU sports were all over the TV, I'd listen to him all the time. I still remember his call of Kennison's PR return against Moo State and Troy Twillie's INT to seal the deal against Auburn. Was just a part of LSU sports. I haven't had to listen to him in a good while, plus it's not as easy anymore living in Florida. Shame to hear how he's fallen off.

Yep. I've noticed that for awhile, especially with football. He always sounds like he's waiting for the next bad thing to happen, plus he has a terrible habit of calling the play before it happens which is one of the first things you're taught not to do. Every time I hear him say "there's nobody gonna catch him..." a tackle is made. He's a childhood hero of mine, so I can't hate on him too much, but he's gotten inconsistent and kinda lazy later in his career.

His call of Kinchen's run against A&M in 1990 was one of my earliest memories of LSU football and made me want to go into broadcasting at age 6. It was powerful stuff.

I was on a flight with him 2 years ago when the baseball team was going to Arkansas. He bitches about it IRL, too.

And basketball had already ended...

He is just a very passionate fan and the Martin 3 was a surprise he made it. He shoots threes all the time and they hardly ever go in. Also he is just mad like the rest of us that we are making it so hard on ourselves to win basketball games. Teams like USC we should be able to dominate
