New record coming out on 2/3/15. WSJ is streaming the entire album until the release date.

quote:

After hard years spent on tour with little to show for it, the North Carolina band American Aquarium fully intended to call it quits after recording the 2012 album “Burn.Flicker.Die.” Instead, the alt-country group found unexpected success—enough to revise their break-up plans and make another record, “Wolves,” which premieres today on Speakeasy.

It’s a collection of 10 scruffy songs shot through with an abundance of roots-rock grit and wistful, road-worn lyrics from singer and guitarist BJ Barham, who calls the album “a huge departure.”

Playing the Varsity on 4/15 (as discussed last week)

Album is pretty garbage IMO, and I'm a huge fan. Too slow and depressing

I found it more upbeat than their previous albums

I like it but it's probably my least favorite album of theirs. I'm sure after a while I'll feel different about it

I will say I have mixed feelings. I need a few more listens to give a full review.

I just did a brief listen yesterday when I got home but I have been sick. I would listen to about a minute then move to the next.

After just that, I didn't come away with this will be my favorite album. However, knowing how I have been in the past, I have to actually give a full listen from beginning to end to determine where this album falls.

It's more upbeat, but lyrically it's repetitive and what isn't repetitive just sounds empty imo. Like I said, it's solid, but not what I was expecting from BJ

man, i don't agree with that at all but i've had a few weeks to absorb this record.
give it some more listening... ramblin ways, family problems, losing side of 25, end over end...

of course theres wolves and wichita falls. i think this is the most mature record both musically and lyrically that they've put out.

these stood out the most besides the three I already listened too. They have good progression from beginning then flowing into the chorus

I would listen from beginning then into the chorus then go to the next song

I like the ending of family problems better than most of the songs on the record hah... i wish they would get weird like that more often

I will say in the brief time I listened to it.. I sort of got the vibe that changed their sound up slightly on a few songs but in a good way
