There was definitely a slight learning curve to the gamecube controls.
When you first got it, yeah. I had been using it for a while before playing this game.
It was just like the 64 controller. Who ever held on to that left wing? But we learned.

ETA Wasn't the yellow stick only used for visor change? Or cannon?

I checked the Nintendo e shop this morning, but Metroid Prime wasn't listed. I guess they'll post it later today?

Original Metroid Prime 1 & 2 used the Gamecube controller. It didn't control like other FPS since the right analog stick (yellow c-stick) was used for switching your beam weapons. The d-pad was used to switch visor modes. The left trigger was held down to lock on to targets, ala Link's z-targeting from the 3D Zelda games. All of the above was unusual but I loved it and thought it worked great.
Furthermore, Metroid Prime 3 was only released on Wii and was 100% designed for the Wiimote. Back when I played it, I switched it to advanced look mode which gives you a sort of free look at all times. It took some getting used to but I just didn't enjoy the default control setup which I believe only put you in free look mode when you were locked onto an enemy. That just seemed super counter-intuitive to me.
When Nintendo released Metroid Prime Trilogy, Retro Studios went back to Metroid Prime 1 & 2 and redesigned the controls to be used with the Wiimote. Additionally, the game could be played in widescreen unlike the 2 originals. While I would like an option to play with the original Gamecube controls, I don't think there's anyway they're going to add that to this release on Wii U. Even still, I had enough fun with the Prime 3 controls that I'm looking forward to playing Prime 1 & 2 with them.
Side note: During subsequent releases of Metroid Prime 1, Nintendo has made sequence breaking (the act of getting items before you are *supposed* to get them) harder and harder. That part of this does frustrate me since part of the fun of playing Metroid Prime multiple times was going back and using weapons and items you weren't supposed to have at different points in the game.

So how well will these hold up? I never played them originally.

I'm downloading it now. Will report back.

Metroid Prime was one of the best games of the 6th gin.

Really, Metroid Prime is kind of like the Jurassic Park of video games. The game is now 13 years old, but the graphics still look great. No reason why you can't enjoy it now for the first time. It's one of the greatest games of all time.

I just finished the first level, the frigate. Graphics aren't too bad, but you don't play a game like this to be blown away by the graphics. I'm still getting used to the controls though.

quote:It's really hard for me to speak objectively about Metroid Prime 1. My wife bought it for me along with a Gamecube the first Christmas of our marriage and I totally felt like a kid again because I didn't expect to get it. Then the game itself shocked me by how good it was. It's easily in my top 10 games of all time.

Metroid Prime 2 is good but much tougher and with less variability in the environments, mostly due to the story & setting. Both of those factors made it a chore to play in places. I actually never finished it, though I got to the very end. I'd say it's the weakest of the 3.
And Metroid Prime 3 is a lot of fun but much more linear and easier than the previous 2 games. You get to fly between 3 or so different planets and each one feels very unique but I kind of missed having the one huge world to explore like in Metroid Prime 1. Also, a big part of Metroid games for me is the feeling of isolation with heavy exploration. Prime 3 just felt like it was missing that since you are so frequently told exactly where to go and the story is much more in your face.
So, I think they all probably hold up but the only one I would say is a must play is Metroid Prime 1.

It's only 9.99 right now and so far worth every penny. The soundtrack to 1 is so great. The music just sets the tone on each level perfectly.
