I liked him. He was at St. Theresa when I went to school there.

Here is a neat article on Fr. Pat and his artwork

Thank you for sharing. One thing I miss about BR is the one Sunday per month that Father Pat would celebrate Mass at the Cathedral. He gave a homily about John 15 that will always stick with me.

Yeah, Fr. Than.

He never smiled and was not friendly toward myself or my wife. He was actually quite cold during our pre-wedding meetings and get togethers.

if so, that's definitely out of character for him.

I have never seen him without a smile on his face. I have known him before he was a priest.

My favorite priest while I was in school. I had a few short but memorable conversations with him when Id study for finals in the ctk library, he was never too busy to shoot the shite with you.

Fr. Than always had a great story to tell. His message often helped to pick me up during rough times in school. Such a sad way to go.

He married my wife and me in 2008, and he was the exact opposite. I feel like I heard he had cancer not too long after our wedding, so he may have been suffering then.

Does anybody know what happened to the organist that collapsed during mass over the holidays?

Very much so. I never knew him to have a bad day, and if he did, you couldn't tell.

He'll be greatly missed. I used to change up my mass times to make sure I'd hear his homily every week. It is just heartbreaking to lose such an inspirational person.

The only thing I can think of is that even as friendly as he was, he always had a calm and peacefulness about him. So perhaps the poster was mistaking his lack of charisma as disinterested.

You're definitely right, his calming presence was one of his best qualities.

WAFB posted a nice article about him and the arrangements. Fr. Than

Wow.

He was a supremely nice person. Great man. Great priest.

Ahh the internet.

This goes to show you that no matter how great or kind or caring or hard working you are- someone is always there to soil your name. Even on the day you die.

He was easily one of the kindest, most sincere, people I have ever known. Everything a priest should be. He came to this country with nothing and touched the lives of so many with his kindness. He was a great man and will be missed

Rest in Peace Father Than

I remember when Fr Than wrote this but couldn't find it today, but looks like its now making its rounds on facebook. Thought I'd share here:

We extend a special welcome to those who are crying newborns, skinny as a rail, or could afford to lose a few pounds. We welcome you if you sing like Andrea Bocelli or like our pastor who can’t carry a note in a bucket. You’re welcome here if you’re just browsing, just woke up, or just got out of jail. We don’t care if you’re more Catholic than the Pope, or haven’t been in church since little Joey’s baptism. We extend a special welcome to those who are over 60 but not grown up yet, and to teenagers who are growing up too fast. We welcome soccer moms, NASCAR dads, starving artists, tree-huggers, latte-sippers, vegetarians, junk-food eaters. We welcome those who are in recovery or still addicted. We welcome you if you’re having problems, or you’re down in the dumps, or you don’t like “organized religion;” we’ve been there too. If you blew all your offering money at the casino, you’re welcome here. We offer a special welcome to those who think the earth is flat, who work hard, don’t work, can’t spell, or come because grandma is in town and wanted to go to church. We welcome those who are inked, pierced, or both. We offer a special welcome to those who could use a prayer right now, had religion shoved down your throat as a kid, or got lost in traffic and wound up here by mistake. We welcome tourists, seekers, doubters, bleeding hearts . . . and you!

That was a great article. Thanks for posting. I had completely forgotten about his story of coming to America with nothing. Such a sad day. He spoke with such passion. I've never had a priest that captured my attention as much as he did.
