Nah, 6/23/00. I didn't go the second night because I had to go to a stupid wedding.
David Bowie and Rock & Roll are the only ones I remember standing out. The rest was meh, but a lot of it was my mood that night.

I saw the very first incarnation of "The Dead" when they all came back together for the first time... in 2002 I think...in Chicago of all places at the Rosemont Horizon (scene of many stellar Grateful Dead shows I saw!)Robert Hunter played an intermission set.
I was not impressed. I wouldn't get off my couch to see that shite again.

Grateful dead's 30 years cover so many different styles of music. So to say they don't provide quality music means you haven't listened.
I don't care for the "have to do drugs" bullshite. I listened to the dead years before doing drugs. They are not some requirement to listening to the dead.

Yeah, 94 in Birmingham. But even before that show, I had friends that were huge Deadheads always playing bootlegs from the 70's and 80's and it never really grabbed me for some reason. I had one of the Dick's Picks CDs for years(Winterland late 70's I think) and that was about the only one I could listen to with any regularity.

Yeah, I really love the Grateful Dead but Phish just does it more for me. Can't wait to be in Chicago to see their worlds collide.

Actually that was in '95...I remember it well as i was there and that was my last show ever. I remember the 2nd night being just Ok but the first night was just god-awful. However, neither were worth a shite in comparison to the band they were just five years earlier...I rememebr Garcia looked like a ghost....looked to be about 90 when he was just in his 50's....It really felt like the end of the road.
All I can tell you is in their prime, there was nothing else like them and if you weren't there, well its just hard to explain. TFWIW.

My bad, 95. I don't even remember which night I went to, and only went because a friend ended up with an extra. I don't remember it being horrible, just boring.
That's what a lot of my friends always say, and it's what I tell youngsters about Widespread Panic with Mikey, so I can see that.

I appreciate what Brent tried to do I just don't think it was a very good fit. He was too strong with the vocals and his songs, while presenting a clear message, seemed kind of cheesy.

Huh??...Mydland was the best keyboard player they ever had....and the longest tenured. The dude could play and really threw himself into the B-3. Played with a lot of physicality and emotion. Agree with you about his songs...but somehow they seemed to work live...he reminded me of Greg Allman, albeit a better musician not as a songwriter.
Godchaux was very good but seemed to get lost in the mix a lot to my ears....great piano player but couldn't play electric....by the end, he was too smacked out and was just gone.
Hornsby is a virtuoso but combined with Welnik the music just sounded too busy....Welnik (RIP) was just a horrible fit and his keyboard sounded like something you would hear on a Casio from Best Buy.

AL.com is running a story on that show to help with a project that a class at Alabama is doing. I love old pics and I love the dead, so I enjoyed it naturally.

Are those pics from that 2-night run? That looks like the outside of the BJCC? Not sure...I moved from B'ham shortly thereafter and haven't lived in Alabama since then. Brings back some memories tho.....Thanks for posting those
