Scouting WMAs post season (ducks)
Posted by jimbeam on 1/27/15 at 7:25 pm00
I'd think birds may move into areas that they won't be in during season due to gun pressure. How does post vs in-season scouting differ?
There are some huge public tracts in LA and I'd like to get a head start on next season

I want to go check out St Catherine and a new area in sherburne that I never knew you could even hunt for duck.
JIM
You will see ton of bird but they disappear until next february. Good thing you may see what spot look like with winter condition you can see far in woods to. Cant hurt unless you bring GH22 cause he may hunt your spot and he so covered up with face paint and sitka camo you can't ever tell if he's there until he sky bust your ducks

actually, right now is the best time to scout...you still have winter conditions but the hunters are all done...
the only problem with scouting this time of year is that water and vegetation conditions can be drastically different now than they will be in the early part of the season next year...that is, areas are likely to be flooded now that will not be flooded when you go back next year...

Good looks like you take heed of your sig line. Musta forgotten what it say the other day when your mouth wrote check your arse couldnt cash. Nothing smart bout sharing public land secret cause then I air my grievances. Thank you

I think now is a bad time to scout for rice fields because after the season they hold lots of ducks and most don't hold birds during the season.
and the marsh ponds don't hold as many ducks because no one is running them out of the rice fields.

Now that the season is over, there were some ducks killed at Sage when it finally flooded 2 weeks before the season was over. However, the walk in guys pushed all the birds deep into the woods. Ended up needing either a boat with a motor or 3 hours of pirogue time to kill them.

Yes go scouting....run the ducks out of the calm sanctuaries....this way they don't feel comfortable next year and don't come back. The reason they close season is too give them a damn break from us so they can feed up, pair up, and prepare to fly north. But yes by all means go mess that up for your area....just don't bitch next year when your not killing ducks again.
