It really is about who you know. Obviously I guess it depends in industry but for me, as far as getting my foot in the door.

I just did good work and networked as much as possible. Shook a lot of the right hands and my body of work spoke for itself. Made it a lot easier to maneuver into getting the types of gigs I wanted.

applied for 100 positions, got about 10 interviews, only got 1 offer, but that 1 was all I needed to start my career.

Got a job in the field for some experience, then contacted some people I knew to move up and that was no help. Applied for jobs in Houston and got 2 offers in the matter of 2 months. Don't be afraid to make a move.

Intern

I interned during the summers and Co-Oped for two semesters. The manager that hired me after graduation straight up told me that my experience as an intern is what landed me the job.

Beggers can't be choosers. If you don't get another internship offer by the time your Regions offer lapses, take the Regions position. Most employers are just looking for the lowest risk possible, and you lower your risk to them by cutting your teeth elsewhere

I will definitely take it, if nothing else...but I would love a company more established in the engineering field

It's not like you even have to network with people that are older and established in the industry. You make friends at school in your major who know people, who will land jobs. They can help you out big time, and really it takes minimal effort on your part. It's literally talking to students in class.

I had to teach five prep classes and coach four sports my first year teaching, only job I could find with an alternate route license at the time. Kicked arse, took names, and I'm better for it. And almost burnt out before even starting my career because of all of that.

Dropped out of college. Did not know what to do. Took a contract hand job sweeping floors and cleaning machinery. Got a slightly better gig full on with company. Got a slightly better position a year later running said machinery. 3 years later after 6 applications someone hired me to do an office gig I was under qualified for and now 9 years from the moment I started, after being laid off from company #1, getting gig through previous networking with company #2, I have landed a gig with company #3 making twice what I was making at company #1 a year ago.

TLDR? Work your nuts (or ovaries) off, shake hands, speak up when you have a good idea and someone is bound to notice.

When the lead architect died while working on the plans for Hatcher Hall, (LSU) one of my professors picked a couple students to help with the drawings for the remodel thru a different architectural firm he was good friends with. They needed more workers to meet the deadline. I parlayed all that experience into a job once I graduated. My portfolio looked that much better with a big name project in it.

Networking.

Otherwise, look for mid sized companies (50-100 employees)--they're big enough to be stable and find a place for you, but small enough so that your resume doesn't get thrown away by some semi-literate flunky or scanned for keywords and ignored.

My pediatrics nursing instructor still worked occasionally on the peds floor at OLOL. She strongly recommended me to her boss and I interviewed and got the job.

-Summer Internships
-Flew out to Cali (its where I wanted to get a job) on my senior year spring break and interviewed with 4-5 companies per day for 5 days. I had made cold phone calls and set up the interviews ahead of time. Has several offers by the time I left Cali.
- worked my arse off in school so I had good grades and a good portfolio.
