Michigan defensive line coach Greg Mattison made an in-home visit to 3-star defensive end Daishon Neal, hoping he could flip the Nebraska commit to the Wolverines. For a while, it seemed like he was making good progress.

And then he said something he shouldn't have.

According to Neal's father, Abraham Hoskins Jr., Mattison insulted his son by saying he couldn't get into Michigan without football—the intimation being that under normal circumstances, Neal is either too poor or too dumb (or both) to meet the admission criteria.

Hoskins relayed the story on Omaha's 1620 The Zone radio station, saying that after hearing the perceived insult, he kicked Mattison out of the house.

quote:

Michigan was a powerhouse, they came in and they stormed us, they made one bad statement and it was over. They said without football, Daishon wouldn't be able to go to Michigan. Like we couldn't afford to send him there, or that we couldn't get him in academically.

Once he said that, we pretty much escorted him out of the house.

[They] basically tried to call me stupid in front of my face.

I was leaning towards Michigan, with their academics, stats, everything. What if he never played again in his life, that degree could have taken him anywhere.

Not the first coach to say that to a recruit.

How is that funny? He is largely responsible for Michigan's top 8 classes in 2012 and 2013.

Truth hurts, dad. Sorry.

ETA: Now, your son definitely can't get into Michigan.

He's probably right. Pretty hard to get in Michigan from out of state. Their admission requirements are a lot higher than Nebraska's

Edit:

Apparently he has a high school gpa of 3.1. He has no chance of getting into Michigan with that.

Uhhhhhh. Why the frick do people get so fricking offended all the time? If this was said to me and my family, we'd either...

A. Disagree and make a case for why we thought I could get in
B. Understand that I couldn't get in without football

Either fricking way, we're still going to be discussing my future football career with a man who wants me at his school. Good lord.

My guess is these parents were too dumb to understand what he was saying.

I'm smart, had good grades, and came from a upper-middle-class family. I seriously doubt I would have gotten into Michigan, and I know my parents could not have afforded to pay out-of-state tuition even if I did.
