Anyone replaced an electric water heater with electric heat pump water heater?

I'm deciding what to do to replace an old electric and this is a new technology to me.
Apparently they run about $1000 (50 gallon) but are 60-70% more efficient and can save you $35+ a month on electricity so they pay for themselves in a couple years.
I'm a little concerned with the 'newness' and if all the fancy electronics will fail..much like the original tankless water heaters.

Do.
Not.
Do.
This.
They are unreliable and they are noisy as frick.
Think about the racket an AC compressor makes and then think about that racket inside your attic.
Rheem, fail.

I've had one for a few years and you're right... It's a lot more crap that can break, but so far so good. It will work off of the heating element alone though (if the heat pump fails).

The Amazon reviews aren't too promising

1) get a GE
2) Mine is very quiet... it sounds nothing like an A/C compressor and more like a small box fan.
Of course mine will be broken when I get home now that I've posted this.

Yep, you did it now.
I bought two Rheem hybrid units.
Both were broken out of the box.
Rheem's solution?
"Here's a box of parts. Let us know if that fixes em".
It didn't matter, when you run them in hybrid mode they are too loud anyway.
I just run them in electric mode and they are pretty efficient.

Why? I have one and it is awesome, always have hot water and I don't spend extra $$$ on electricity to heat the water when I don't need it, which is nice since electricity is 36cents a kwh here.

couldnt keep up with 2 adults & 4 kids.
in fact, it couldnt keep up with filling the tub and a faucet on at the same time.

Replaced mine with a Rinnae model 94 tankless gas heater and couldn't be happier. Runs all showers at the same time whether washing clothes, dishes or whatever. The trick to tankless is gas though. Get an electric one in our area and your electric bill will go through the roof.

So, you bought an undersized unit. Did Amazon sell it to you, too?
