OT answer- sub 4

IRL answer - 7 minute mile

Yup. I am pretty muscular so not a great runners body, but could do 7:15. 6:30 now, but that took a ton of training to get to.

10 mintutes is absolutely not a decent time for a reasonably in shape person.

Man, I have planned vacations while out on a long run before. It's one of the few times I don't let anything else bother me. I just let my mind go and am shocked sometimes where it leads me

Thas exactly why its probably the most mentally challenging sport. Everyone looks at naturally gifted runners and assume they dont hurt like you hurt. its just "easier" for them. Its all relative. If you arent hurting every sec of your race you are doing it wrong. I wasn't always the fastest runner in the race but I found some sick twisted enjoyment out of pushing myself past the point of pain. In order to be elite this is a necessity not a luxury. In other words frick running. I absolutely despised training. I was just a fiery competitor

i've never run just 1 mile.. but even in my prime i never did better than a 8:30 mile during a 5k or 10 k.

now it may take me an hour.

Yeah, I was joking.

There are times when it can be a bit boring, like anything else, but it is the second-best stress reliever in the world.

Clears the brain...

I detect a lot of truth in this thread.

Unless you run regularly or stay in shape by playing sports, anything under 10 minutes is really good.

I'd bet more than 75% of adults in this country are totally incapable of running one mile.

I can do 5 miles in about 40 min without hurting myself

That's pretty terrible if true.

I really want to argue that percentage with you...but I don't think I can

which is incredibly sad

That attitude has landed me in the Dr's office more than once I just have the desire to push as hard as I can, and sometimes harder than my body can handle. I always thought of it like this.....once it starts hurting, push harder. It's like the pain is a challenge

I have always just counted my breaths when I run. Helps me keep track of what I'm doing

Eta: I'd say more like 90% of people are incapable or running a mile, and 25% are incapable of walking a mile

Obviously, there is no way to prove it but I think more than 25% CAN run one mile, but ability =/= desire and they would stop ahead of time because they could.

If every single American could magically get 1 billion dollars if they ran 1 mile, I bet that number would be higher than 25% depending on what the time limit was).

yep

I try to run with my wife, but she stops running too easily. As soon as she starts breathing heavy, she stops. I tell her that she can keep running but she just says its too hard. I always tell her that if you can talk you aren't running hard enough.

She usually gets mad and walks home

im 34 and have pretty bad knees, i run a few short distance runs a week just so i dont get fat. I would like to make it to a half but my knees just will not let me. I can do 1 mile in 7:15 but that is really getting after it. up to 3 miles in the 9 min each mile range 3-5 in the 10 min range and everything after that in the 11 min a mile range...

8 minute mile isn't that difficult. 16 minutes for 2 miles is getting a little more difficult. 24 for 3 miles and you're in decent shape. Not speaking for athletes, just your average going for a jog to stay healthy pace. Anything over 3 miles and my pace is about 10 minutes a mile. I don't find I really slow down any after that.

Go watch the end of an Ironman and you'll see plenty of people that wouldn't think could run a mile finishing. Most people just choose to quit over feeling terrible.

Lol no way the average person runs an 8 mile minute. Closer to 10 mins is more like it I'd think.
