I've read some older threads where a few guys made Google Earth image overlays for their Lowrance Elite 7-HDI units with some free computer software. Does anyone know if the same would work for an Elite 5-HDI? I am looking for a new unit for my kayak, not sure I'd want to go any larger than a 5.

I don't see why it wouldn't work.

I have the 4, would definitely go with the 5... at least. I would love to have the 7.

Me and elusiveporpi made them for our elite 7 hdi units. It would work for yours. The only difference in the units is the screen size.
I originally had an elite 5 DSI - you can not make maps for a DSI unit because it does not have the function to read raster images which is what the satellite overlay is composed of

Those are the answers I was looking for, thanks. I'd love to have a 7 as well, just not sure if it would be too large for a kayak...

Depends on the yak and the application. For yak fishing in the gulf, I would like to be able to see all 3 screens. Can't do that with the 4 inch and still see clearly, So I either go back and forth or just split between two.

oh when you get a micro SD card, make sure you get the largest you can but dont go over. my unit can read a 32 gig. im not sure what the capacities of the 4 or 5 is. My 5 HDI could only read a 2 gig

Picked up my new Elite-5 HDI Saturday, could you link me to the How-To info on the Google Images overlay? I came across it a few months ago but having trouble finding it now.

I got the standard map chips for the areas we run and they've been extremely helpful. We have the 7 on our GatorTail cc and it saved our butts in the fog this past duck season.

I didn't see it, but OG and I are neck and neck in the age category.

Yeah 299 for unit transducer and extras. If you wait to the 11th they are running triple crown promotion ($25 gift card, 3x reward points, and free installation. I bought one this weekend and installed in my boat.
