Yay or nay? I've been looking for a job, and I saw online today that a perfect job for me (basically the same thing I've been doing) was posted. Upon further investigation, I found that it's at a place where I do frequent business. I'm kind of nervous about applying because I don't want to make it awkward if they go with someone else. I still have to do business there. Also, I'm uncertain of how to approach it. I don't have personal ties, but I do see these people quite often and they know me. I don't want to be informal but I also don't know how to write my cover letter. Just like I'm applying for a job at any other place? Any advice appreciated. TIA

if you are familiar with them, just go talk to them. see if they are interested in you applying for the job. if they are, submit an application and resume.

It's frowned upon or more accepted in some industries relative to others. For example, in construction, it's prett much an established fact that many of the workers working for the general contractor performing maintenance on a plant can end up working for that plant directly. Many construction companies are pipelines for jobs with various chemical companies and refiners. With construction laborers, it's even more ubiquitous. People change companies with every job. If they work a maintenance job at the same plant for years and their company loses that contract, a large percentage of those employees will stay behind and work for whomever takes over that contract.

I don't think McDonald's will turn away your business if you don't get the job... I think you'll be good

I called this morning and asked one of the girls what she thought. She said go ahead, and she didn't think it would be awkward. I just don't want them to feel weird about it. If they pass on me, okay. I'm not changing places because of it. They're really the best at what they do. I just don't want to make it weird.

It wasn't funny the first time. Just keep trying, I guess.

Honestly man, whats the worst that happens? You don't get hired? If you didn't, would you take your business elsewhere if they truly are the best at what they do? YOLO brahh....

I think the OP is not a male - cud be wrong - thought I seen a thread identifying her of the female variety.

I'm not worried about not getting hired. If I don't fit, I don't fit. I'm worried about making it awkward to do business there in the future. I wouldn't take my business elsewhere, but I don't want to make it awkward for them.

Who cares if it's awkward? You're just doing business with them.

What type of workplace is it? Is it a place where they could intentionally/unintentionally give you bad service?

if you know people on the inside go talk to them first. as we all know at times when you see the posting for a job you are already too late

Oh God no. They would never. It's a medical office that takes care of my son. They're awesome people and always have gone above and beyond for him. They'd never do anything less for him. I have no doubts on that. But because we work so closely together for him, I'm uncertain if it's a wise move on my part to breech that line. Not concerned in the least about the care he will receive in the future regardless.
