I started looking at the other exxi thread when it was just under 10 I think...kicking myself for not jumping in at 2.33 last week. I know its a gamble but has so much potential if they can hang on.

NOLAGT,

I am trying to teach my 13 year old about the market. She had $500 to buy any stocks she wanted to and would keep track of them. She put all $500 into EXXI at $2.80 per share.

My older brother has some consultants that works for them and says it will go up.

I don't think the bottom of the energy stocks has come just yet. I believe they will go back down over the next couple of weeks and then slowly go back up.

Haven't really looked into VGENX, but just after glancing, I see VDE has a lower expense ratio, higher dividend, and different companies that are comprised inside the fund

I have already bought into VGENX, looking into VDE. Does anyone think I should wait or go ahead and hop in VDE and buy it all the way down?

I'm really digging into Solar stocks right now. Not because of anything to do with oil prices, it's just time for Solar to take off. The industry has become relatively cheap, and low oil prices don't necessarily matter for the solar industry. Oil is primarily for transportation, where solar is propped by energy needs.

Taking it a bit more risky, I like Chinese Solar. I think they will lead the charge of bringing Solar costs down even further and developing the industry as a more utilized source. There are so many environmental issues over there.. it's filthy.

Another noob question for anyone. Would it be stupid to purchase these energy stocks with your Roth IRA and hold them long term?

This investing strategy is not completely redundant however I hope you realize you are buying XOM twice. VDE buys a basket of market weighted energy stocks of energy stocks as XOM is the largest energy company in the world, it is the biggest holding in the ETF (about 22%). This ETF will move pretty lock step directionally with XOM however the magnitude will vary. The ETF does provide some diversification and avoids single stock risk (like BP Macondo risk) however at 22% of the ETF that is still HUGE exposure to one stock for an ETF and is pretty atypical.

You might want to rethink your strategy and go with one or the other.

Start a 20 to 25% position at any given price and then buy more on dips.
