My 15 year old beagle just walked into the living room wobbling and shaking on all legs. She looked scared and couldn't seem to be able to sit. I hugged on her a while then gave her half an aspirin with some banana bread. She's now laid down and seems comfortable. I thought at first it might be a seizure. She is slower than she used to be but has been in good health up til now. She will still dance on her back legs when we get home.

UPDATE Later in the morning she was walking around like she was drunk, her head was tilted to the right and when she fell, it was to the right side. Have had her at the vet and he diagnosed it as idiopathic vestibular. It has improved gradually but she may continue to have the head tilt long term. Another symptom that I didn't notice is rapid eye movement. Most dogs do improve greatly in 1 to 2 weeks. Some may have reoccurrence. Hope we don't have it happen again but good to know what it is.

I'm sure they can. Seizures are much more common though.

Yes they do. I've had a dog and a cat that had strokes and survived.

My dog was 17 and playful as a puppy until he had seizures one morning and led to putting him to sleep within weeks. Part of me died with him. He was a good friend.

Probably a seizure. I have a 12 year old beagle who has had seizures about once a month for most of her "adult" life. It's really sad, but there's not much you can do to help. You just have to sit there and patiently be by her side until it's over. Mine shakes a lot and then can't control her limbs very well. She starts foaming at the mouth and then throws up and goes to the bathroom. Meanwhile, she's just looking at you like "make it stop".

It's heartbreaking to watch.

ETA: other than the seizures she's as playful as a puppy. Loves to howl and chase squirrels around. Howls like a crazy person when you come home. Beagles are the best.

She seems to be more comfortable now. I know she's very old but I've never had this happen. Glad your pets recovered.

Probably a seizure. Sad to say that's typically a sign the end is near.

I'm pretty sure my 17 year old rat terrier had one last summer. She couldn't walk and could barely lift her head. Her eyes were really jumpy which lead the vet to believe she suffered some sort of massive neuro damage

having even a minor stroke can lead to seizure activity. very common in older dogs.

I had
a golden that was very playful and then bam- died within a week. vet said it might have been a heart attck but her heart sounded good. probably a strokebut no way to know (cheaply).

I know her time is near. She has been the most kind and gentle dog I've ever known. She's turned over quite a few kids that were afraid of dogs because she's so gentle. Our family loves her dearly.

Our cat had a stroke (or so the vet believed), causing her to fall down the steps. She was paralyzed from the fall. Had to put her down. Sad way to go.

Yes, a friend's lab has bad seizures from several strokes suffered earlier in life. There's medication for it if it becomes a chronic problem.

I know that's tough. As Wheninrome said his dog has had seizures for years so maybe yours can be treated. I hope so.
