It is political suicide for a legislator from one of these places to let that happen.
This is what's really going on. Could you imagine the ammunition a democratic candidate would have in Shreveport if his or her competitor suggested shutting down SUSLA like it should be?
The elephant in the room is that it's a crime for a lot of these kids who attend low tier universities in the state who have false hope of landing a job after graduation. A lot of successful alumni of these schools send their kids to LSU, tulane, or OOS and give their money and even athletic support to LSU

Louisiana has the 4th most state workers per capita in the country.
start trimming the fat there.
Quit buying new furniture and carpet and other crap that isn't a necessity in state buildings.
Quit having 6 supervisors in a department with 12 people total.
You could probably cut the state workers in half and not feel a ounce in loss of production, if you cut the right workers.
It's not racist to say to close schools like Grambling and Southern considering we get very litte return for what we put in at those schools. Yeah it sucks to close down historical schools, but they aren't schools that are worth a shite anymore.

I think Jindal's higher ed strategy is to let schools wither on the vine until they have to close. It avoids having to make politically tough decision. And there will always be the hometown politician who will fight to keep them open.

We have the largest Department of Transportation workforce in the United States with over 5k employees. We have road projects that have been sitting on desks for over 40 years and this state agency has the highest corruption conviction rate of all the other state agencies combined.

yeah, I'll reiterate that the successful alumni of these schools almost never give back to the school or send their kids to their respective alma mater. historically black colleges are basically obsolete. there's nothing racist about that, because the numbers back that claim

oh I wouldn't limit this to just "low tier" universities. I have a feeling the unemployment lines are littered with college graduates from all universities. And all disciplines.
The elephant in the room is the belief that the only way to get a good job is to get a college degree. In this current job market, that simply isn't true. Yet higher ed and the lending institutions (including the Federal Gov.) keep selling people on the importance of a degree. the whole time many of these students (some who probably are not suited for such academic endeavors) borrow money that in turn goes to the universities. In return, the borrower gets a degree that is of little use- devalued because degrees are more commonplace. Oh and a big fat load of crippling debt with which to start his/her adult working life. Thank you very much!!
THAT is the elephant in the room and the real scandal.

I say, cut Nicholls St., Northwestern St, and Grambling. Keep Southern to still have an HBCU to appease that crowd. But, cutting those three podunk schools from the budget would alleviate financial pressure have the affect on the least number of individuals.

that's a good point. Just pointing out that Louisiana's university problems run much deeper than the majority of states

In todays world I have no understanding why we still have HBCU's.
We say we truly want a society where the basis of ones success should not be measured by the color of ones skin but we continue to ostracize them from the rest of us
Also, I have no idea why we continue to hand out minority scholarships. Imo, one is not a victim due to the color of your skin and this shite that we continue to do cements this "I'm a minority" mindset many of them have

Given TOPS 'ridiculously easy criteria to receive, minority scholarships in Louisiana is ridiculous. That Advocate article a few weeks ago talking about TOPS not going to minority and/or low income families was a fricking laugh riot. The program doesn't discriminate, and if you honestly can't qualify its easy requirements, just go to trade school and have a healthy middle class life

I saw that, what a hack job
TOPS should bump up their requirements. I'm not from LA, but they can give me any extra & I'll gladly take it

No not all all I just don't like my tax money going to a state agency that significantly under performs & waste my tax payer money. How much money & time has the DOTD wasted on the BB Sixty Rayburn Highway?
Posted on 1/27/15 at 2:04 pm to GeorgeReymond
Louisiana politics as a whole gives me such a defeated feeling to the point I wish I could quit reading the news until shite finally hits the fan

every person who pays taxes in Louisiana or buys gas here, should have a massive hard on for DOTD. They have got to be the most wasteful, unproductive, public-tit-sucking parasites in the state. I view them as worse than welfare recipients. At least I don't expect productivity from welfare recipients.
