Is it just the casting of him particularly?

ETA: if the RR movie hadn't bombed so hard, any non Hal GL wouldn't be up for discussion

And so many people lay that at the feet of Ryan Reynolds as if it were his fault. That movie was a mess from start to finish and had little to nothing to do with Reynolds. It was a poor script that was poorly directed and then chopped into pieces in the editing room. Just terrible all around. No one could have saved that movie from itself.

Man I like Elba but holy fricking shite this board has overrated him to the extreme at this point. He is not the end all be all of black actors.

Well a lot of those guys do not fit the model of the black super heroes out there.

I mean Howard could, I did forget about him, but Jeffrey Wright? Did you just start naming black actors?

I was thinking about characters who look like black super heroes, that are not already committed or played a previous role, and have enough name power to pull it off.

I'm not sure what you are talking about with the "looks like black super heroes" bit.

Like as in literally looks like the guys as they are already drawn?

B/c if it's a body type thing all the guys I mentioned can get into the shape required to be a former architect and marine. It's not like GL needs to be shredded on the level of Superman anyway.

and no, I didn't just start naming black actors, I named ones I think that have the acting chops to carry a film.

Wright can play a bad arse (see his bad guy in Shaft) and he is only a few inches shorter than JS in the comics. Really the only issue with him would be age.

Right, meanwhile Ejiofor, Oyelowo, Harris could pull it off. Vance and Wright, even if they aren't, appear too old to me. Tate I'm not as impressed with and I fricking hate Howard, so I wouldn't want him to play any character ever in the history of cinema, regardless.

But the first 3 can definitely pull it off. If Mackie hadn't already played Falcon, which I had forgotten about, he'd be perfect.

Damn Ron, tell us how you really feel about it.

But I can't really argue with anything you just said. For me, Hal will always be the 1st GL that pops in my head. He had a much bigger role and had a much bigger effect on the DC universe as a whole than Stewart in several of their big universe affecting storylines throughout the years. And like you said, his cockiness was always a nice change of pace against Batman & Superman (I always thought he personality over all was a nice change of pace from those two). And since the New 52, he has been placed back in the "lead" GL role for the JL.

Ditto.

Way more depth and far more relateable.

I personally like Stewart more then Hal as well, but outside of Elba, I do not know any black actors that I think could carry a singular film by themselves.

Maybe Michael Jai White, but I do not think he has the name recognition. You could do Will Smith (I know, but remember, he actually is a pretty good actor when he wants to be), but he is in SS now.

I got nothing. I could see Common playing the role, but only in a supportive role.

I'd like to see Adrian Lester given a shot. He was on an awesome show called Hustle. He's British but Im sure like Elba he could pull off an American accent.

Looks pretty badass. I don't really see Green Lantern as a very marketable franchise so I wouldn't mind them getting a little creative with it.

I thought the last Green Lantern should have been black. I thought they really blew it with Ryan Reynolds.
