Bookmarked

Some good ideas on kitchen layouts there as well

Since I seem to be debating the most about what I want to do with the island and where I want the range to be this should help

Make sure you have electric outlets installed if you decide on building an island. Thank goodness we asked for that. Large sink helps. Gas range 8 burners with removable griddle. Two ovens

All my opinion of course. Good luck and let us know what you come up with - pics included.

It's pretty much a spec house...only changes I'll be making are to the kitchen. I'm leaving everything else alone completely.

And I'll be gone for work most of the time so I'll probably have to look at giving some legal authority to my girlfriend or something.

No clue how that would work

Get the biggest garbage disposal you can buy. Ask them if you can put a whole chicken in it and grind it up without clogging!

That would scare me. Honestly, it would. When I bought this house, I gutted the kitchen and took out a hallway that ran behind it. I came by from work one day to check on things and they'd installed a piece of wood over the windows above the sink with all kinds of swirls and hearts cut out in it. I was WTHing like crazy. That was only one thing. There were other issue, though I guess with a spec house, it is what it is, except for the changes you make.

As others have said, you can't have too many outlets on the island. Also, whatever amount of counter space you think you need, add at least 25%. Definitely go double sink if you can. Ours is large enough that my wife can be rinsing or straining on one side and I can either do other prep or wash dishes on the other side so we don't end up with a pile at the end of the meal.

Also consider checking out friends kitchens, ask what they like and what they would do differently. We are hopefully going to build in the next few years and I'm writing notes on what I'd change in my kitchen plus trying to steal ideas from anyone that I can.

Some want a trash compactor. Some don't. I wish I'd put one in, myself.

Wait, they still make trash compactors? I thought they went out in the 70's because of the nasty smells.

My sister has had one for years and I've never noticed any type of smell from hers. I've never heard of that being an issue.

One thing we love is a pull out board with the mixer sitting on it. It's in the center island and goes behind a cabinet door when not in use. The mixer stand is on a hinge and swings up and locks into place while in use.
On one side of the island we have pull out recycling bins. In another pull out drawer we have the toaster. It's nice to not take up counter space for the toaster and mixer.

I have always heard that they were kind of nasty and hard to clean when used over a long time.

I looked into getting one in my last two houses and was promptly talked out of it by the builder and appliance people. I felt like they treated me like a leper after I asked about getting a trash compactor.

I am intrigued by not having to take the trash out as much though.

Can you post a photo of this? Having a hard time picturing it but it sounds really smart and functional.

I dunno. I'm at my sister's at least once a week and always use it when I help clean up after the meal. I've never smelled anything unpleasant.

She redid some of her kitchen recently and someone asked last night if she kept the compacter. She said its her favorite appliance, so I assume she's never had an issue with smell or cleaning.

The biggest most powerful vent hood that blows outside you can buy.

A pebble ice machine is an awesome feature.

Double oven.

Double sink, one big one smaller. The big one is nice for big pots and pans but it's hard to do dishes and try to defrost something at the same time.

200 degree hot water tap at the sink. You'd be amazed at how much you'll use this. Instant coffee temperature great for sanitizing baby bottles/"nuppies".

It looks just like this one, except we have it in our center island. I think it's called a typewriter shelf or something like that.

That's quite cool. Thanks for posting, I couldn't for the life of me picture what it looked like.

My sister has a few of those but in lower cabinets so they don't show. Her deep fat fryer is on one of them. Really convenient.
