re: Duck Season in ReviewPosted by TigerDeacon on 1/26/15 at 11:40 am to OGhunter777
Had the worst season I have ever seen. Didn't see many ducks, mostly because the water levels in the timber kept going up and down like a yoyo.
Hunt one place, ducks are in another. Go to hunt the other, ducks are roosting there and leave before daylight.
All in all, lots of bad luck this year.

15 Grey's
7 Hooded Mergansers
3 Goldeneye
Now that's an impressive list, excluding the hoodies & scaup

Decent season, and much better than the last two. First time in my life we've killed more mallards than teal. Fewest gadwalls I've seen in years and not nearly as many spoonies. Can't complain about that!

Also, the greater scaup - I've never killed one. Lots of lesser, though.
I have a hell of a hard time telling the difference between the Greater and Lesser Scaup. I 've tried studying this but I still don't have the hang of it. Any help appreciated.
Greater vs. Lesser Scaup
re: Duck Season in ReviewPosted by OGhunter777 on 1/26/15 at 12:33 pm to webstew
From what I understand, if you kill one, you will know the difference due to the size of them. Much larger than a lesser scaup. More comparable to a redhead than a scaup with regards to size. I wouldn't know though, because I've only killed the lesser, at least I think.

Hell we might just make a weekend of it and Call it the OB hunt.
I suggest a weekend OB fishing trip first.

FWIW, a friend of mine tha fishes TB in the winter said the waterfowl in the area were thick.
I wouldnt doubt it considering the increasingly westward movement of the migration pattern.
See ya next year. Love some hunting new places

Biggest difference we see in adults is the size of the head and neck length while flying....Lessers have a short "no neck" syndrome...Greaters have a long neck much like a Redhead. Actually really rare to even see a lesser on TB. Greaters rule the roost Junvenile ducks its almost impossible to tell.

Great season up on Toledo
Quick question OBC - buddy has a lake house near twin islands and the golf course - we always talk about making a duck hunt. What are the regs for hunting the main lake as far as blinds etc?
Thanks
re: Duck Season in ReviewPosted by OleBallCoach on 1/26/15 at 1:08 pm to hunt66
hunt66......we hunted off the edge of that 13th green for a few years back in the early 2000's....and people still do from time to time....its a solid area to hunt because of the fertilizers from the course that go in the lake right there grow some awesome different grasses. You can build permanent blinds as long as they are off the bank a good distance not to upset folks living up there or golfers in that area. Just common courtesy. Game Wardens don't bother us much unless we get called in by the locals for chasing down cripples in the boat to finish them off.

Thanks OBC - we may cross paths up there one day on the water. Keep us posted if the OBGT gains traction and good luck with the fishing.

Damn all those divers and no ring necks?
I killed a total of 135 out of 12 hunts. That was 85 ring necks and 26 dogris. A whole 9 ducks were big ducks. Season was shittier than last year. Ring necks and dogris were all killed in dularge. Other hunts were in 35 acre crawfish pond in Raceland.

a duck died
no telling if it was the shotgun pellets or a heart attack, but he did die.
ST taught me that I'm a sugarass and if we'd listen to him more often everything would be dead by now.
ETA: Redfish, what's this OK trip Greenhead speaks of that I haven't been invited on yet baw

Great season in South AR, mostly Mallards, with occ woody in the flooded timber. Acorn crop kept them here in huge numbers, and everyone seemed to limit out daily once Jan hit..Don't know final numbers, but camp blew away old record. Can't wait for next year...
