What "Stay With Me" song are you talking about?
If you're referring to Rod Stewart, he's not gay.

Stevie Nicks secured an agreement from Prince to use the music from "Little Red Corvette" for her hit song, "Stand Back". But, that was an obvious thing - she was listening to the song on a long car drive and wrote alternate lyrics. Prince agreed, but insisted he play the keyboards so they would "sound right". He is uncredited, but receives songwriting royalties as the composer of the original music - all of that was negotiated in advance.
It wasn't anything negotiated in advance:
quote:
[...] Prince's song "Little Red Corvette" came on the radio. Nicks started humming along to the melody, especially inspired by the lush synthesizers of the song, and "Stand Back" was born. They stopped and got a tape recorder and she recorded the demo in the honeymoon suite that night. Later, when Nicks went into the studio to record the song, she called Prince and told him the story of how she wrote the song to his melody. He came to the studio that night and played synthesizers on it, although his contribution is uncredited on the album. Then, she says, "he just got up and left as if the whole thing happened in a dream."

If Ice Ice Baby was determined not to be a rip off of Under Pressure I don't know how you could possibly argue this is a rip off.

Everyone keeps calling it Tom Petty's song but he co-wrote it with Jeff Lynne, so he will get royalties too. I just wanted to mention that because Jeff Lynne is awesome and more good things should happen to him.

"About the Sam Smith thing. Let me say I have never had any hard feelings toward Sam. All my years of songwriting have shown me these things can happen. Most times you catch it before it gets out the studio door but in this case it got by. Sam’s people were very understanding of our predicament and we easily came to an agreement. The word lawsuit was never even said and was never my intention. And no more was to be said about it. How it got out to the press is beyond Sam or myself. Sam did the right thing and I have thought no more about this. A musical accident no more no less. In these times we live in this is hardly news. I wish Sam all the best for his ongoing career. Peace and love to all."

If I'm on the jury, I rule in favor of Smith.
They are 2 different songs.
They are 2 different songs.

First thing that came to mind for me was The Faces, and this many years before anything Tom Petty really did...
