No you're right. But again, I don't think that type of comment is nearly as prevalent in the real world as it is online where it's anonymous.

More, to be honest.
Vegetarians and cross fitters are worse than Atheists.

Is that maybe because you lead more towards the later? I find both of those to be complete tools to be honest with you.
Assuming both are assholes, which a-hole do you think occurs more? Atheists, even by the most generous estimates, make up maybe 7-10% of the general public...if you believe the polls that indicate belief at about 90%. I'd argue it's likely higher but people are afraid to to say they do not believe, but I'll take the plain ole stat for this. Given the sheer math of the thing, who do you think are out there in greater numbers...the obnoxious religious person or the obnoxious atheist?
Here's another point I'll bring up...how often do you even run into a known atheist? what percentage of your friends, family, co-workers do you KNOW are atheist? It's tiny, isn't it? what percentage of them are vocal about it...even to the point of casually talking about it without getting heated? How many are open douches about it? Ok...what about everyone else that compromises your religious friends? How often does church or faith come up? How many are passive versus how many are very vocal about it? Tweet about it, share links on Facebook about their faith constantly, etc?
For the person of faith, the overly vocal religious person can be some much more easily ignored...because even though they may be behaving like an arse at least the message is one you'd agree with. But their numbers are legion. I'd have no problem making the bet that I hear far more religious messages per day than you'd hear atheistic per month.

As a person who doesn't watch television, I feel like we should be included in this grouping. Because we're better than people who watch television, and we'll likely work it into conversation as well.
Probably but I've noticed most of the time it is me excusing myself from the conversation because I can't add anything when asked. A LOT of our conversations these days revolve around the media we consume I'm afraid. I'd rarely just volunteer that I don't have cable in a conversation.

I tend to think most people that fall into some sort of "group" tend to dislike those people that fall on the sides of being "activists" or overly vocal.
I realize it sounded like a joke when I said it, but if we did not live in a society completely dominated by faith and specifically Christianity I would never EVER have any reason to even think about my lack of belief in it. I mean...when was the last time any of you Christians felt the need to argue about or even contemplate your lack of belief in the Olympian gods? what if 75+ of the American public and nearly 100% of all elected officials worshiped Zeus? I'm thinking you'd have to address it a bit...
I've never ever walked into any room and declared my atheism. First...because it seems unnecessary to me at it's core. But the real reason is I never say a word about it until I'm almost forced into it. When I talk about it, even on this board, it's a return of serve. It never gets brought up first.
I think the thing that seems funniest to me is the idea that vocal atheists, as rare as they are based strictly on the math of it all, are somehow more often run into than vocal Christians or people of faith in general. The next time an atheist shows up at your door to convert you, it'll be the first...
While I tend to not fully agree with a lot of what you may be presenting as somewhat of a possible truth to be understood from certain perspectives, I can't support this because of your obvious gluten biased.
Perhaps it's you who should take a step back, put down the po-boy, turn off Breaking Bad and consider things from a different angle.

Sorry...I meant to address this more specifically in the previous post and did not.
While I think it's true that some atheists take this specific line, I do not think it's true for most. While there is CERTAINLY a group of moronic folks who are religious, I do not think AT ALL that the only folks who are religious are stupid or that to believe one most be stupid. That's absurd on its face.
The problem is that I think the religious essentially assume that's what you're saying about them when you say you disagree...and in a way you sort of are even without saying it, if that makes sense?
When I tell a religious person that I do not believe in god or the supernatural, they begin to unravel what that means. It means that they believe in what I'm describing as a myth, even if I don't say it that way. they know what those are...they too don't believe in myths and would likely think that those that do are silly for believing in such things. That's why it's so easy to get them riled up and why any and all push back by atheists is met with "WAR ON FAITH!!!!" type language.
As you said...I'm calling into question the most precious of their core beliefs...there is just no easy way to say that and when that happens people get angry.

Meh, not really. I'm more agnostic than anything at this point in my life. Churches seem to be much more problematic than religion/spirituality.

As do I.

Several aunts, uncles and cousins are college professors or professional students who have never been in the private sector. I get a lot of all types of fringe thought thrown at me from them. I am probably an outlier there though. I get your point that there are more religious people than atheists though.

The only place I agree with people who act like asses is on the OT.

I definitely see more of it on message boards, where everyone is anonymous. I believe most of it is trolling though. It is easy to rile people up when it comes to religion.

I didn't know atheists had the reputation of being very vocal.
really??? they might be the worst of the 3.
Only on the internets, where their identities are unknown. I've never heard a vocal atheist in public.

Damn, I didn't know we had so many victims on this site. I'm sending prayers for everyone!!!
Prayers are needed. Do you have any idea how many times I've gotten into conflicts with people over not watching television? Every time I take my family out to a restaurant and they have that idiot box on, I'll politely demand that it be turned off. Then some bigoted manager will come out and tell me I have to quit screaming because I don't have the right to not watch television. It's fascism plain and simple.
The struggle is real.

I see them all of the time. And yes, I have had atheists try to convert me by going door to door. Vocal atheists are terribly annoying people, almost as much as evangelical Baptists.

Where? Do they at least wait until after 7am on Saturday, unlike those damned Jehovies?
I've lived in La almost a half century, and never had an atheist come to my door. Mormons, Jehovies, Baptists...but never an athiest.

And Christians often tell atheists that they're "missing something in life" or something stupid like that.

I don't remember if my 40+ years on the earth ever having an atheist being a loudmouth about it.
