Are gift cards the biggest racket of modern times?

You give the business money up front without receiving anything. Oftentimes they are lost, or forgotten about. Other times you go there and spend twice as much as the value of the card.
They're a pretty transparent scheme.

I more often than not use gift cards.

I guess if youre buying something you didnt intend on buying before.
Most gift cards I get are for restaurants. get some food and order some extra wine and its all used up. Usually just pay for tip and maybe a few extra bucks
and most gift cards now are like a credit card. its not a 1 time thing. use it til the money is gone

Gift cards are convenient if you don't have a specific gift idea. Gift cards have saved me the time of actually giving a shite what someone who I don't really communicate with but have to get a gift likes. Plus there good for prizes.

I think the number is about 16% that doesn't get used on an average gift card. It's called breakage and the companies push gift cards because of it.

Lowe's gift cards are the best Christmas and birthday presents ever. No thought required, in and out the store in five minutes, and they even come with tiny little gift envelopes for them. fricking awesome.

Schemes dupe stupid people. Stupid people will inevitably be duped by someone. Right now it's gift cards. Tomorrow? Probably some kind of Apple Pay modification.

I LOVE giftcards.
Would much rather a giftcard than a gift I may not even really use or want.
To me...it's 2 gifts in one. You've given me the giftcard and the gift of shopping
I know I don't forget about free money given to me. I usually use mine within a month or so of receiving them. Only one I've held onto for a long period of time are the REI giftcards we got for our wedding over 2 years ago. But they never expire and we are just saving it to use towards something we really want there instead of $400 of whatever from there just to use them.

My mom often gets me gift cards for my birthday or Christmas. They're usually for chain restaurants..I use them when I remember but sometimes I find ones from years ago. I know I've probably not used ~25% of them just by forgetting or misplacing the card- that's free money for the company. These businesses fricking love when people buy gift cards.

of course they like it because its money upfront. its a money maker from them but it is a good gift for people when you dont know what to buy them.
for instance, i bought multiple people gift cards to donald link's places this xmas. i know they all go to his places so they would get use out of them.
i would hardly call it a racket or a scam(you didnt say this word)

Exactly. Just make sure to look and see when they expire. Most don't, but some may or start losing value after a certain amount of time.

I love gift cards too. If you waste them, it's your own fault.

Maybe racket isn't the best word, but I feel like a sizable amount of money these companies make is due to unused gift cards.
I'm sure the cards to Donald link's places will get used, since his restaurants are awesome.I'm mainly referring to the cards you can buy at a drug store for national chains.

Visa Gift Cards FTW
You must mean getting them? I made a mistake I won't ever again and bought a few of them for the admin that I work with for Christmas. I was at Safeway and they have a huge gift card section and so I didn't really pay attention to anything other than the company and the amount. So I pick up six $25 Visa cards and then the girl starts peeling the backs off each one and scanning them. I wasn't looking at the register as I was on the phone. Anyway, they had a $3.99 fee on each one for the interest for Visa since they're a credit card. What a load of horseshite. And of course, you can't return them once she's peeled the backs
Next time, I'll just get direct cards for restaurants, stores, etc. How ridiculous that you have to pay $29 for a $25 gift card. I imagine the $50+ are even more. frick Visa gift cards.
