whats the process like applying?

Haha, i mean I knew what I was getting myself into, but there comes a point when you just start to wonder 'Do I really need to be a 21st century cabbie?"
I made about $1500 in extra cash over a period of 3 months or so. I was working when I wanted to, and was usually home before 10 or 11. There was one night when I stayed out til 2 AM, which was a PITA.
But seriously, anyone can sign up (if they meet the criteria) and drive whenever they want. Especially now that you can use your own phone, and don't have to pay their $10/week service fee (for using their phone).
I'd say if you work 5-6 hours during a couple of days each week, you could make enough to pay a car note.

You apply online, they run a background check, and you have to supply them with your driving information (pictures of license, insurance, VIN, registration, inspection sticker). For UberX, the car has to be 2005 or newer, with 4 doors (must have a seat belt for 4 passengers). UberSUV would be a Tahoe or similar and must have seat belts for 6 passengers. They have an initial meeting with you in person (not sure if they still do this or not, since I joined when they first started) and you can get started with your work. They give you a sticker to put on your windshield and promo codes to give to new users for percentages off.

what if you have a DUI but it was a long time ago, is that an automatic no-no?

Tiger rob,
What is the payment structure is it an hourly rate or some type of commission? Some of the drivers i have talked to tell me there is some bonus incentives based on number of fares as well. I would probably never get them because I'm only looking to do this on nights and weekends that I have nothing going on.

That would depend on if the arrest/conviction showed up on a background check. I think they are just pulling your driving record, but I am not 100% sure.
As for payment structure, the short answer is it is completely commission based. You receive 80% of the base fare, and Uber keeps 20%. They offer incentives and change the fare structure at their will, based on the city you work in, and other promos going around. I've heard in large cities like SF or NYC, that they will cut their commission to be more competitive against other car sharing companies. Sometimes they will offer minimum hourly rates with an 80% acceptance rate (which they did when first starting in BR) so drivers will be available when customers need them.
I could sit at home waiting for a fare, and make $10-$15 an hour. This payment would be aggregated across your week of work. So if you were on four hours and had no fares on one day, but made $40-$60 the next day, you wouldn't be paid additionally for the 4 hours you were working that first day without a fare. Of course, like I said, you had to show an 80% (or whatever it was) acceptance rate.
I don't think they do this anymore because of the saturation of drivers in BR. Sometimes for special events, they will provide promos to drivers and/or passengers that provide extra payments or give discounts. They also did some contest during football season, where the driver with the most fares got a lump some cash payment ($300-$500 or something).

So since you get 80% of the fare it would be best to drive during surge pricing when the rates are exponentially higher.

Yes, this is why they do this. High demand calls for more cars, and Surge pricing gets the drivers where they need to be.
For all of those who use Uber, there is an app called Surge Protector that will show you where surge pricing is. Usually, you can walk a few blocks out of the way to get to a location that won't charge you 6x fares.

I'm in nola so it might be a bit more difficult but I have a feeling the program will catch on here shortly.
I wouldn't do it now as only Uber black is approved in NOLA. Wait to the regular service gets going and more and more people find out about it.

Isn't Uber Black a more lucrative pay out?

I use uber all the time and looked into being an uber x driver. IMO it isn't worth the risk of being dropped by my insurance company.
99.9% of personal auto policies specifically exclude use of your vehicle as a livery vehicle. If you happen to get into an accident or if your insurance catches wind you will be dropped immediately. They are really cracking down on this.

Interesting... does uber not have a policy that covers the driver while on the job?
Posted on 1/26/15 at 4:25 pm to LSU5508
uber has coverage, he means your standard car insurance, most all standard car insurance policy does not allow you to be transporting customers around.

how would they ever know? If i'm in an accident and i need to make a claim I would make the claim on Uber's policy correct?

I heard that one the questions they ask during the process is whether or not you've used your vehicle for rideshare.

Interesting if ubers policy covers you while working and your personal policy has no liability for your über driving It seems strange they would drop you. However insurance companies do love to f&ck you if they can.

The Uber policy is liability it covers the passengers. It doesn't cover damage to your vehicle. And how exactly is the insurance company fricking you over? You're paying insurance based on personal auto risk yet you're using your vehicle for business purposes?

I did it for a while, and have stopped over the past few months. The money was really good at first, but be prepared now to go sit in a parking lot and wait around for a pick up. There are a lot of drivers in the BR area, and you really need to fight for those fares.
That being said, if you hustle, and don't mind working late nights and driving around drunk people, then you can make some serious cash. I just got tired of picking up random people.
My exact feelings. I did it a lot for a while and haven't done it in about 2 months. Once they took away the guaranteed hourly rates and starting finding every way possible to not pay people, I quit doing it. I do have some awesome stories though.

I have a feeling the money could be real good until the market fills with drivers. Right now there are not many drivers in Nola however the demand might not be that high either. However based on the dogfight the city counsel had trying to ban it I imagine the market has to be at least decent.

That's the problem Baton Rouge has..there are way too many drivers. When I first started out I was averaging close to $35 an hour. When I officially said frick it I was making about $10. There are just too many drivers that congest the only areas of demand.
