It's happening right now in Africa and the Middle East. We are just standing by while ISIS kills anyone that does not agree with them and letting the Boko Haram kill 1000s of people and rape school girls.

Someone else already mentioned it but films like this should be showed in all schools so no one ever forgets how evil people can be.

The part in Band of Brothers where they get the local citizens to come out to the camp and help clean it up and care for the survivors was a great scene as well.

I recall watching what I believe was a TV mini-series(not certain though)on the Holocaust. I am trying to remember the name and would appreciate the help if someone can provide the name of the show. It was a while back so my memory is a bit fuzzy but the one scene that stuck with me was when a group of prisoners escaped...they were caught and the ones who not shot on sight were brought back. The prisoners were all assembled and the escapees were brought to the front. Each escapee was ordered to go into the crown of prisoners and pick someone out to die with them or they would execute everyone...that scene just stayed with me but again if someone could help me with the name of the show I would appreciate it!

Well that sounds like an interesting movie from what I read but I want to say it was an English(language) based production. I was hoping someone would remember that scene because it was one that just left me thinking, did I really just see that? I remember the escapees walking into the crowd and finding the most elderly and feeble ones they could but the look on the faces of the poor people they each chose was striking.

I visited dachau a few years back. The film they show there before the tour makes Schindler's list look mild. It was very interesting to see but a very somber experience to say the least.

I visited Dachau in '05. They didn't show a film then, but the place speaks for itself. Even though it wasn't a 'death camp', many died and many lived in unbelievable conditions and circumstance. I'll never believe the German excuse of "we didn't know".

This is very similar to the Roman practice of decimation. Many people think "decimation" means "complete destruction" but back in Roman times, when the army had deserters or mutinied, they were punished with decimation, a practice in which they put the soldiers in groups of 10, and picked a soldier in each group; the other 9 soldiers would have to beat the selected soldier to death.

It's brutal as frick... but it worked.

It's hard for anyone in today's world to understand how this "sheep like "mentality could ever exist alongside the mass murder that occurred in the Holocaust. But, for one, the Nazis took their time, starting in the mid to late 30's, to develop the process, so the Jews, Gypsies, communists were slowly indoctrinated mentally. But, most importantly, if you read enough on this subject, you'll read again and again how the victims back then just could not believe that the Nazis would ever do anything like this. I mean, who could comprehend something like cramming victims into the back of trucks & riding them in circles till the victims died of carbon monoxide poisoning, by the 1000's in the East? Or Babi Yar, where over 30K Jews were forced into the pits & murdered one by one over a few days? It was unimaginable.

I personally dont think most Germans had a clue. Unless you were SS or at the camp, how would you? It wasnt like it was talked about or broadcast on Fox News

When you're stripped, beaten, and threatened with death everyday, as are all your friends, it's probably hard to rebel against armed guards.

Gradual process. The propaganda, then disarming them, then removing many male heads of household. So society is indoctrinated, their guns are taken away from them, then a number of male heads of households are arrested. The nightmare is overwhelming for many of them who are just in disbelief that all of this is happening to them. German people were also conditioned to obey authority. It all makes sense, but it is also evil as hell. Yes, we need to fight for our own rights from those who seek to take them away from us.

This movie was a good one. Other recommendations are "Conspiracy" and "Holacaust" (followed story of the family Weiss). The movie "Nuremberg" (sp) is also a fair follow-up (version with Alec Baldwin).

LINK

BBC 6 part series called Auschwitz: The Nazis and the Final Solution.

VERY good series, not just on Auschwitz but on the whole Holocaust. They interview survivors as well as SS guards. Remarkably several of the guards show no sympathy or remorse.

ETA: I think it's still on Netflix

Parents rented in when I was in the 5th grade. Made it only 45 min into movie. So heavy. Haven't tried watching it since.
