Before Coach K

Tulane Basketball > Duke Basketball

Think about that.

How many scandals or issues has the Duke Basketball program had over his tenure?

HINT: Rhymes with "hero".

Meh, the Corey Maggette stuff kind of got swept under the rug, even though he should've been ineligible for their Final Four run in '99.

Then there was the Lance Thomas jewelry stuff a few years ago.

In the 90s, several players were admitted to the school with far below-average SAT scores and some got suspended for cheating.

Let's not act like Duke basketball is different than any other major collegiate sports program.

link? Not necessarily denying but I hadn't heard of that.

that shows accountability on the part of the school and program, if anything

No . Before Coach K got there they were already a very solid program.

I've read a lot of stuff surrounding that scandal, and I tend to agree with your statement.

Nothing from that makes any sense.

Here's an old article I found. The radio host I mentioned earlier that graduated from Duke has talked about stories on the air too detailing more of this stuff from his time there.
quote:

Earlier this month, the San Jose Mercury News, examining data from 1994-97 (the last four-year period the NCAA used for documentation of grades and test scores), found that freshmen entering Duke on basketball scholarships during that period had an average SAT score of 968. The average SAT score for Duke's freshman class as a whole is generally in the high 1300s

LINK

As far as the accountability for cheating, I don't disagree with you, but I mentioned it because these players were allowed to play again.

Hey I'm not criticizing Duke for it. They're playing the game like everyone else.

I'm just balking at the assumption Coach K and his program are above everyone else in their conduct. Hell, Penn State football was considered the gold standard for doing things the "right way", then the Sandusky stuff broke.

I would support Alabama hiring him for 5 million.

Duke may not have any national titles before Coach K, but they had been to the Final Four 4 times before he was hired. Of course Coach K has done way more than his predecessors, but Duke still had its share of accomplishments before him.

What a stupid question. Yes. Undoubtedly. He put Duke on the national map. He. Himself. He is Duke. Without him, Duke is a liberal arts university no one thinks about except for those nerds who do well enough on the ACT or SAT to get into schools like Wash U or Brown, but can't get into Harvard or Yale. He is probably singlehandedly responsible for tens of millions of dollars in university funding.

This about sums it up......

ouch

Yeah, I was a nerd that got fricking wait-listed at Wash U... I wish I could have gone to Duke. Of course, I didn't apply there. I may have gotten in. But it didn't help me that 15 or so of my high school graduating class went to Wash U (all but 1 were minorities and the 1 that wasn't was a child of a professor there...). Not a lot of diversity when 15 or so kids all come from the same high school in St. Louis.

And no, I'm not fricking bitter about it.
