What all did they test?

They have a closet full of all kinds of ammo -- just about anything that might ever be involved in a homicide, attempted homicide or accidental shooting.

Is there a reason you chose a handgun over a shotgun or rifle for primary home defense? Both long gun platforms are superior in performance.

1) I'm not walking around outside or trying to clear my house with a 30-30
2) My shotguns are hidden around my house so they don't get stolen. I am willing to lose a pistol, but absolutely not willing to lose one of my heirloom shotguns
3) I'm not buying a gun specifically for home defense. My pistol is good enough for concealed carry and home

Also take into account that not everyone carries a handgun with a 4" barrel
Your point is well taken, but 4" isn't a real long barrel. The shortest 9mm Glock has a 3.5" barrel (well, actually 3.4").

I understand that some folks choose poodle-shooter sized handguns. But it's just not that hard to dress around//accommodate a G19 (4" bbl, 16 round capacity) or something comparably sized.

I carry a 9mm Shield as a BUG. The next time I have the chance I'll get the 147 grain HST tested in the Shield -- in the meantime, that what mine is loaded with.

Gold Dot ammo in any handgun is never a poor choice. And for J-frame revolvers, the Gold Dot 135 grain 23921 short barrel ammo is pretty much the gold standard.

The YouTube channel that really opened my eyes was ShootingTheBull410. He is the only guy I've seen that consistently tests hollow points from short barrels since that is what most of us civilians will be doing.

Love this guy's data, does very good research and presents it well

I understand your sentiment but even if a G19 is easy to dress around, not everyone carries one. I carry an M&P9c, which is slightly smaller, but has a 3.5" barrel rather than a 4". That half inch could possibly make a difference with certain loads since pistol powders burn so quickly.

I'm interested to see the results. But from the way HST's have looked from other sources I've read, I bet it'll be a great performer.

Remington Golden Sabres because Sportsman's Guide keeps putting them on sale for $14 for 25 rounds.

You would be a lot better off buying a good gun safe and storing your guns inside the safe. "hiding" your guns around the house is really not a good way to prevent them from being stolen.

As for home defense ammo, it's the same ammo I carry in my pistol when not at home. Barnes TAC-XPD 115gr 9mm +P.

Trust me, the only way someone would be able to find them is if the house burned down. None of them are together, and they would be if in a safe. Besides, I don't have $1500 to spend on a safe and I've heard stories of people stealing safes that are bolted down to raised houses

I don't think 11-18 ft/sec (that's the difference 1/2" BBL length made when Hickock 45 compared Hornady Critical Duty in G26 and G19 and G17 LINK), or even 30 ft/sec., is gonna make the HST rounds not expand fully.

But I'll make an effort to test the expansion of HST in the G26, G17 and G34.

eta: Federal/ATK uses 4" barrel in their gelatin tests of the 147 grain standard pressure HST ammo. They show .85" expansion in bare gelatin and .69" expansion in "heavy clothing" (which I presume to be the standard 4 layers of denim). They don't say what brand of gun was used.

I recall seeing expansion & penetration tests performed by ATK for various LE agencies comparing brands, loads and guns -- those sites are no longer up, but I don't remember seeing any significant difference among barrel lengths.

1911- Magtech 230 JHP, Golden Sabre or Gold Dot's. Those are three that have proven to be reliable over and over again with my mags and gun.

Glock 19- Speer Gold Dots are the only thing Ive ever shot through it and they run perfect so not changing.

870 20 gauge- Federal 00Buck

After looking around, I was curious to hear if the guys at LSP had tested and Xtreme Penetrator bullets. Do you know anything about them?

I'm not any kind of expert on what they do at the lab. But it's my understanding that their examination of handguns and their testing of ammo are primarily to assist investigations into unlawful shootings and LE officer involved shootings.

I doubt there are many thugs or cops using the ammo you asked about. But the next time I have lunch with my friend I'll ask.
