Is it acceptable to ask what you should wear to an interview?

If a company asks you for an interview but they don't clarify the dress, is it acceptable to ask? It's in the same field I'm in now and I wear khakis and an Oxford. This job would be a step up though. Not sure if dressing as I do now is ok but also think a suit would be too formal.

What says the OT ballers?

There was recently a thread on this.

Suit and tie, and don't even ask them.

No.

If you don't know, wear a suit.

The only time I've not worn a suit to an interview, the guy specifically told me that I didn't need to wear a suit or I knew the guy already and it was an informal interview, like at a restaurant.

Suit up unless you're told not to.

Asking is too passive and will get you overlooked. Demand the information you want.

Suit. If you're overdressed, you'll have something to laugh about.

It's understood that you wear a suit. Anything less is at your peril.

What you wear on a daily basis has zero impact on the expectation in most fields that you wear a suit for an interview. Maybe some engineers or O&G people will say otherwise, but in most every white collar profession where folks wear what you wear every day, they anticipate suits for interviews.

Dress for the job you want, not the one you are interviewing for.

If someone asked me what to wear to the interview, it would set off some bells for me that this person might not be a very mature person or not that bright. Not meaning to call you names, but don't ever ask a potential employer that. If you're unsure, ask a friend. Or as others have said, wear a suit. Better to be overdressed than under dressed.

Always suit. Never hurts to be overdressed. If you have a 2nd or 3rd it may be appropriate to ask, but always suit up for the first.

A guy interviewed at our office the other day and came in wearing a suit/tie. For a CNC machinist job.

He got the job after his references checked out. I know for a fact that the suit put him over the top.

I interviewed for an attorney position with an NFL team. I wore a QB jersey. Didn't go so well.
