To those who have lived in both the country and the city, which do you prefer?

There's a part of me that wants to buy a farmhouse with a few acres of land out in the sticks somewhere. My wife agrees. We want to have a few kids, enjoy our time together, and spend our days and nights outdoors. We don't like traffic. We don't like a fast paced life. We don't really care that much about making a lot of money and buying a whole lot of modern, fancy things that reflect a social status.
But we do like good school systems. We like good restaurants. We like concerts, museums, and neighbors. We want our kids to have a good peer group and be placed in a position to succeed in life through college and a knowledge of how the world works.

If I could find a utopia of rural area with some sophistication and smart, well-rounded neighbors, it might work. I know there are some resort-ish areas out west where this might be the case. Maybe Yellowstone Club or something of that sort.
Problem will always be that I can't make money in those places like I can here.

I grew up in a very rural home and now in the city
both have advantages/disadvantage
I like the quietness of the country and land. I like space. But I hate long commutes. I also do not like the lack of community.
I enjoy living in the city because of the convenience and the communal feel of a real neighborhood. I never had that growing up. I really enjoy seeing the neighborhood kids play in the street.
My wife has always lived in the city so we will probably always live in the city.
I could never live in the suburbs though. I don't get how people live like that.

On the outskirts of some town or small city.

This is how we've been living for the past six or so years. I hate it. Long commute, very few amenities, kinda shitty neighbors.
The city though is always too expensive. I spent my childhood in New Orleans. LOVED it. But I could never afford to live there at least not for the foreseeable future.
But after I finish graduate school, our destination is probably Birmingham, AL. I've been looking at Leeds for potential country living. Not too bad of a drive to 280 for food and stuff but far enough away to get more house and more land for less money.

Because they don't offer 2000 square foot houses with multiple acres in the city?

City. Way more stuff to do and better restaurants.

yeah if I'm going to have a commute, I might as well make it 15-30 minutes longer and live in the country
why would I anyone want a long commute yet still have neighbors next door?

Obviously there are advantages and disadvantages to both, and different people will like different things.
Personally, I much prefer the city. I like being around people and amenities (esp restaurants, grocery stores, and bars).
When I lived out in the country it took forever to get to school, to run basic errands or to go out to eat, there were not many neighbors around and to me it just felt a bit isolating. It was cool being close to outdoor activities and feeling like you had a lot of privacy.
For me I prefer to live in the city and then drive when I need a fix for nature (which is like twice a month), rather than live in the country and drive in every time I want to see people or do something (which is everyday).

Living anywhere is pretty awful, to be honest.

Live in city but buy property in country to do redneck stuff

Country if your kids are at home.
City with a country place otherwise.

I prefer living in a small town with easy access to a city. My favorite place I ever lived was just outside of Boston. Public transport had me in the middle of the city in a half hour, but the town I lived in only had about 10K people.

I've done the whole decent neighborhood out in the country thing and I hated it. The long commutes to and from work and then when you want to go do shite you're always 45 minutes to an hour away from anything decent. frick that life. I now live in Algiers. Close enough to the city but still in a nice neighborhood with good neighbors. I am 10 minutes away from anything I could possibly want or need. I'll take this area any day over the country shite.

Lived in both. Will never live in the city again. I like shooting stuff off my porch whilst peeing.

There aren't "neighborhoods" in the country.

Much prefer city.
I like nightlife. Zachary would shutdown at 9.
